The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY

American Citizens have a very serious problem with posted Trump signs in THE UNITED STATE OF AMERICA

    HOW BAD IS IT?

CHECK OUT THE LIST AT THE BOTTOM

HOW BAD IS IT IN WA STATE?

    You decide

Theft! Vandalism! written threats (Tacoma WA “I will Kill your Family” a police report was filed)

Filthy words sprayed on our Trump signs and verbal threats in Port Angeles WA, Clallam County

First, I was warned, if you put up Trump signs in your yard “Somebody will break out your windows”

Now the threat has escalated to a new high “ARSON”

REALLY? SOMEBODY SHOULD BURN DOWN MY HOUSE?

BECAUSE I HAVE A TRUMP SIGN IN MY YARD?

In Aberdeen, the other day every one of the Trump signs people had put up last trip were gone too.

The rash of vandalized, folded, spindled, mutilated, destroyed and ripped down Trump signs all across WASHINGTON STATE has left the Trump Headquarters in Vancouver out of Trump signs.

Trump Signs the Good, The Bad and the Ugly

    The bottom line…

I’D RATHER BE A LIVE TARGET FOR DOING SOMETHING

THAN A DEAD VICTIM FOR DOING NOTHING.

    The good

Senator Benton’s good son Adam hand delivered (8) 4X8 foot signs to Clallam County from Vancouver.

The good Trump Supporter Randy found locations to post them.

The good locations, for Trump signs, the Shooting Range, Highway 101, Lairds Corner, Highway 101 two on our Sol Duc Property and three on Highway 101 East bound near Sequim.

    The Bad and Ugly

A 4X8 foot Trump sign in Tacoma was vandalized with 20 sticker, one said, “I WILL KILL YOUR FAMILY”, The police were called and a police report was filed.

    The Bad and Ugly

The three on Highway 101 East bound near Sequim,  one was torn down, the other two had the word “FUCK”, 12 inches tall painted across the top in bright red letters. A complaint was not filed, Hundreds of people just drove by

    The Good

A logger named Dave came into the GOP on Lincoln St in PA Thursday afternoon to report, that after seeing the FILTH on the Trump signs, he drove into Sequim, purchased  blue spray paint, drove back to the signs, climbed over the barb wire fence, across the field, sprayed over the “F” word.  There were Seven Trump supporters in the GOP office. I was one of them, Dave did not know who put up the Trump signs, I did and I told him.

    The Bad and Ugly

The rash of vandalized, destroyed and ripped down Trump signs all across WASHINGTON STATE has left the Trump Headquarters in Vancouver out of Trump signs.

    The good

The 4X8 foot Trump signs on the Sol Duc will be placed 20 feet up on trees. Hand painted signs are very effective ( remember, they stopped the Wild Olympic Scam)  Good job…. Great idea… Homemade signs up about 20′ in a tree.

When the first Trump sign was ripped off and stolen in my front yard, my neighbor was the first person I thought of…

While I was replacing the second ripped down Trump sign,

The nasty next door neighbor, (I have removed her name and address for her privacy)  came out side and bitched me out

for my putting my 2X4 foot Trump sign “back up” on the chain link fence.

I told her, it was the second time,

so, I called the Police reported the ripped down sign. Case #2016-12219

Her snotty reply, Don’t the police have anything better to do…

She does not appreciate the unwanted attention of a Trump sign on the chain link fence.

SHE IS A VERY HATEFUL PERSON.

Because, When the first Trump sign was ripped off and stolen in my front yard, she was the first person that came to mind.

I really question her following “ARSON THREAT” dialogue

Melinda said, SHE HEARD, SOMEONE IN A PASSING CAR SAY

“SOMEONE SHOULD BURN DOWN THAT HOUSE “

She said, she yelled at them, “THAT’S NOT MY SIGN”

She’s really mean spirited, nasty attitude, rude, hates politics and politicians.

SHE HATES ME FOR PUTTING UP TRUMP SIGNS….

Did she JUST make up  the threat of someone burning my house down, to threaten and intimidate me?

Omaha homeowner files police report after Trump campaign sign repeatedly vandalized
    Published  6:14 PM CDT May 24, 2016

OMAHA, Neb. —Omaha homeowners say their signs backing Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, have been stolen.

[Video: Omaha homeowner files police report after Trump campaign sign repeatedly vandalized]

Donald and Shirley Livingston have been living in their south Omaha home for more than 20 years, but this is the first time they’ve felt strongly enough for one candidate to put a sign in their front yard.

“It’s just a promotion of the man we think would be the best president in 2016,” Donald Livingston said.

Last week, they said, they started noticing a troubling trend.

“Last Wednesday, the sign was down and we replaced it. Then the next day the sign was taken away totally,” Donald Livingston said.

    Then another incident.

“My wife came down stairs and it was all shredded,” he said.

The couple said the latest incident occurred in broad daylight.

“And I even ziplocked it, so no one could take it. And he was so furious he did as much as he could to shred the sign,” Donald Livingston said.

“When they tore the sign apart it really got to me,” Shirley Livingston said.

However, this problem isn’t unique in their neighborhood.

A homeowner a few blocks away said she’s had more than 30 Trump signs stolen from her front yard and anti-Trump profanity graffiti on her garage.

The Livingstons simply want whoever is behind this to think about their actions.

“Do an anticipation of conscience before you physically destroy someone’s property,” Donald Livingston said. “If he wants to come up to my front door and debate with me that fine, but don’t tear my signs up.”

One of the couples told KETV NewsWatch 7 that their neighbor spotted the culprit in action. They described him as a tall white man. The couple have filed a police report.

    Shabbot shalom,
How this piece will affect you is not in my hands. I hope it’s wisdom does have its good effect. Otherwise we remain more dangerously asleep then we had before we read it. We either respond to our first nature, and dig in our heals to not move, or we meditate, asking favor from our engaging LORD, our Father, as to our right part in the encroaching war that is more boldly consuming the world politic with bloody results.
To each one of us a response, wisely guided by His Spirit, is required, and you will know that a response is in no uncertain terms required as you read this man’s observations of the certain and consistent diabolical results that occur upon our necks by our personal responses. Each one of us, to prevent the occurring encroach of violence is called on to engage in this war wisely.
Thus the future is not in leaders hands, but in our own. Have we not heard, that when good men do nothing, we encourage violence against the innocent? There is no face sitting, as this article shouts from the roof top. To think otherwise we remain as given over to our enemies as did the fallen who took no heed before us.
What therefore is our part? If we can not ask that question without full reverence in light of our maker, of what are we but spent salt waiting to be trodden under, as the billions who continued in intoxicating inertia- the deadly drug, our enemies ever succeed by, “when good men do nothing”. Eventually only Maker, He, like our enemy, never sleeps, can help those whose talents are purposefully not buried by our default mode, our violent indifference. Sleep is hate in this war as in all wars. Our avoidance is a hateful purposed response.
Love in His purpose, for our re-engagement for that is the only thing that love looks like,
Someone else wrote of this man’s observations in part,

“This is one of the best explanations of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear- (by) Dr. Emanuel Tanya, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist. A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.”
‘Very few people were true Nazis,’ he said, ‘but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care.
I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost
control, and the end of the world had come.’

‘My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies
    destroyed my factories.’ ”
‘We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is a
religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in
peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely
irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff meant to make us feel better, and meant to
somehow diminish the spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name
    of Islam.’

‘The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the
fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting
wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or
tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire
continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or
honor-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the
fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and
homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become
    suicide bombers.’
‘The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the ‘silent
majority,’ is cowed and extraneous. Communist Russia was comprised of
Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were
responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.’

‘The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering
sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an
orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet. And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery? Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were ‘peace loving’?

‘History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers
of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points:
peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence. Peace-loving
Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up, because like my friend
from Germany , they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and
the end of their world will have begun.’

‘Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans,
Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died
because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.’
‘Now Islamic prayers have been introduced in Toronto and other public
schools in Ontario , and, yes, in Ottawa , too, while the Lord’s
Prayer was removed (due to being so offensive?). The Islamic way may be
peaceful for the time being in our country until the fanatics move in.’

‘In Australia , and indeed in many countries around the world, many of the most
commonly consumed food items have the halal emblem on them. Just look at the
back of some of the most popular chocolate bars, and at other food items in your
local supermarket. Food on aircraft have the halal emblem just to appease the
privileged minority who are now rapidly expanding within the nation’s shores.’
‘In the U.K, the Muslim communities refuse to integrate and there are now dozens
of “no-go” zones within major cities across the country that the police force
dare not intrude upon. Sharia law prevails there, because the Muslim
community in those areas refuse to acknowledge British law.’

‘As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that
counts – the fanatics who threaten our way of life.’

    Lastly,
anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just deletes this email
without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the
    problems to expand.

    Extend
yourself a bit and send this on. Let us hope that thousands world-wide
read this, think about it, and send it on before it’s too late, and we are
    silenced because we were silent!!!

The Russian Orthodox church talks of holy war. Mr Putin’s claim to be fighting Islamic State (IS) is questionable at best. The evidence of Russia’s first day of bombing is that it attacked other Sunni rebels, including some supported by America. Even if this is little more than political theatre, RUSSIA IS MAKING ITS BIGGEST MOVE IN THE MIDDLE EAST, hitherto America’s domain, since the Soviet Union was evicted in the 1970s.

Kerry Views Russian Bombing of Syria as ‘Opportunity’ For U.S.
    by John Hayward30 Sep 2015368
Yesterday, Secretary of State John Kerry described Russian action in Syria as a potential “opportunity” for the United States, suggesting the Russians ought to follow President Obama’s agenda in Syria.
NOW THAT BOMBS ARE ACTUALLY DROPPING, KERRY’S RHETORIC HAS HARDENED A BIT, BUT HE STILL DOES NOT SEEM TO FULLY COMPREHEND WHAT IS HAPPENING.
In a Tuesday interview with CNN, before the Russian bombs began falling, Kerry tried to talk the Russians out of supporting Syrian dictator Bashar Assad. “If he’s going to side with Assad and with Iran and Hezbollah, he’s going to have a very serious problem with the Sunni countries in the region. That means he… could very well become a target for those Sunni jihadists,” said the Secretary of State, referring to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
“It’s an opportunity for us to force this question of how you actually resolve the question of Syria,” Kerry continued. “And the bottom line is, you cannot resolve it without including the Sunni(s) in a political solution, a political agreement ultimately, and that will mean that you’re going to have to have some kind of transition, some kind of timing. Because as long as Assad is there, you simply can’t make peace. Period.”
He went on to insist that Assad must go – in a gradual and “orderly” transition, rather than a swift departure that could cause a political “implosion,” and actually cited the Syrian refugee crisis as an example of people “voting with their feet” against the dictator.
The following morning, Russia would tersely inform the Obama Administration that American aircraft should stay out of its way while it began hammering the Syrian opposition, and its targets most certainly were not limited to ISIS and al-Qaeda.

The BBC notes that the attacks began after a mere hour’s warning to the United States,

and while Russian defense officials talked about targeting the Islamic State, a U.S. official said that “so far, they did not appear to be targeting IS-held territory.” Sources within the Syrian opposition confirmed this assessment.
On Wednesday, Kerry reportedly changed his welcoming tune and told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that the U.S. “will not be altering our operations and that this announcement by the Russians runs counter to their stated efforts of deconfliction and is not helpful to that effort, and again made clear that the deconfliction discussions need to begin immediately,” according to a senior American official.
At a U.N. Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Kerry mixed this carping about Russia being unhelpful with wishful thinking about how they could be so, if they felt so inclined. “If Russia’s recent actions and those now ongoing reflect a genuine commitment to defeat [the Islamic State], we are prepared to welcome those efforts and find a way to deconflict and therefore multiple our efforts,” said Kerry, as reported by the Washington Post.

As Russia’s Cruise Missiles Strike At Targets In Syria, NATO Stands With Turkey
    October 08, 2015 8:51 AM ET
A day after the Russian navy fired cruise missiles at targets in Syria — and two days after Russia’s warplanes veered into Turkey’s airspace — NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says the alliance “is able and ready to defend all allies, including Turkey, against any threat.”
Speaking at nearly the same time, Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said, “Russia’s joining the struggle against terrorism on Syria’s territory will lead to changes in the region and the whole world,”in remarks relayed by Russia’s Tass news agency.
Speaking at a summit of NATO defense ministers, Stoltenberg said Russia has raised tensions in the area since its military began carrying out attacks to support Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad. And he dismissed Russia’s explanation that it had been patrolling Turkey’s border as a way to help the country.
“Turkey is a strong ally. Turkey has the second-largest army in the alliance,” Stoltenberg said.
Russia launched a series of cruise missiles from its ships Wednesday, supporting a new push by Syrian government troops. Parts of the offensive were broadcast on TV, showing missiles streaking toward their targets.
Today, Syrian rebels are claiming to have forced down a Russian helicopter.
“An amateur video shows two helicopters descending at low altitude,” NPR’s Alison Meuse reports. “The crafts are close enough to the front lines in central Syria for activists to catch the emergency landing on camera. Activists say the helicopter landed in a regime-held town—miles from the nearest military airport.”
Alison adds that the new ground and air campaign in Hama province has met with strong resistance.
“Rebels claim to have destroyed more than 15 regime tanks in the past day,” she says, “with TOW missiles supplied by the US and its allies. Activists say Russian and Syrian warplanes have retaliated with fierce bombardments.”
Russia says the missile attacks hit nearly a dozen ISIS targets — and the country says the attacks haven’t harmed civilians.
    NPR’s Corey Flintoff reports:
“From the very start of this bombing campaign, the Russians have strongly denied causing any civilian casualties. Russian officials are accusing Islamic State fighters of hiding among the civilian population, and they say Russian warplanes have canceled attacks whenever there was a possibility of hurting non-combatants.”
NATO, U.S. officials, and others have noted that Russia has targeted U.S.-backed rebels who are fighting Assad, rather than focusing on ISIS strongholds as the country initially declared it would do.
As Defense Secretary Ash Carter traveled to Brussels for today’s session, he “ruled out cooperation with Russia in Syria,” Teri Schultz reports for NPR’s Newscast, with Carter saying Moscow is following the “wrong strategy.”
Carter said he wants the U.S. and Russia to coordinate their operations in the region only to avoid possible collisions in Syria’s airspace.
In his speech kicking off the NATO meeting, Stoltenberg also said the alliance will establish two “small headquarters” in Hungary and Slovakia, two countries that have been caught up in the refugee crisis that has sent thousands of people into Europe this year.
Hungary and Slovakia also had a front-row seat to the recent clash between Russia and Ukraine: they share Ukraine’s westernmost border.

Exclusive: Congress probing U.S. spy agencies’ possible lapses on Russia
WASHINGTON | By Mark Hosenball, Phil Stewart and Matt Spetalnick
Senior U.S. lawmakers have begun probing possible intelligence lapses over Moscow’s intervention in Syria, concerned that American spy agencies were slow to grasp the scope and intention of Russia’s dramatic military offensive there, U.S. congressional sources and other officials told Reuters.
A week after Russia plunged directly into Syria’s civil war by launching a campaign of air strikes, the intelligence committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives want to examine the extent to which the spy community overlooked or misjudged critical warning signs, the sources said.
Findings of major blind spots would mark the latest of several U.S. intelligence misses in recent years, including Moscow’s surprise takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea region last year and China’s rapid expansion of island-building activities in the South China Sea.
Though spy agencies have sought to ramp up intelligence gathering on Russia since the crisis over Ukraine, they continue to struggle with inadequate resources because of the emphasis on counter-terrorism in the Middle East and the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, according to current and former U.S. officials.
A senior administration official, who also asked not to be identified, insisted that there were “no surprises” and that policymakers were “comfortable” with the intelligence they received in the lead-up to the Russian offensive.
Spy agencies had carefully tracked Russian President Vladimir Putin’s build-up of military assets and personnel in Syria in recent weeks, prompting White House criticism and demands for Moscow to explain itself.
But intelligence officers – and the U.S. administration they serve – were caught mostly off-guard by the speed and aggressiveness of Putin’s use of air power as well as a Russian target list that included U.S.-backed rebels, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“They saw some of this going on but didn’t appreciate the magnitude,” one of the sources told Reuters.
Russia’s sudden move to ramp up its military involvement in the Syria crisis has thrown Obama’s Middle East strategy into doubt and laid bare an erosion of U.S. influence in the region.
A shortage of reliable information and analysis could further hamper President Barack Obama’s efforts to craft a response on Syria to regain the initiative from Washington’s former Cold War foe.
    BEHIND THE CURVE?
It is unclear how his administration could have reacted differently with better intelligence, though advance word of Putin’s attack plans might have allowed U.S. officials to warn the moderate Syrian opposition that they could end up in Russia’s line of fire.

Obama, who is reluctant to see America drawn deeper into another Middle East conflict, has shown no desire to directly confront Russia over its Syria offensive – something Moscow may have taken as a green light to escalate its operations.

Syrian troops and militia backed by Russian warplanes mounted what appeared to be their first major coordinated assault on Syrian insurgents on Wednesday and Moscow said its warships fired a barrage of missiles at them from the Caspian Sea, a sign of its new military reach.
Russia’s military build-up now includes a growing naval presence, long-range rockets and a battalion of troops backed by Moscow’s most modern tanks, the U.S. ambassador to NATO said.
The U.S. administration believes it now has a better understanding at least of Putin’s main motive – to do whatever it takes to prop up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. But Washington remains uncertain exactly how much further Putin is willing to go in terms of deployment of advanced military assets, the U.S. officials said.
The lack of clarity stems in part from the limited ability of U.S. intelligence agencies to discern what Putin and a tightly knit circle of advisers are thinking and planning.
In a tense meeting with Putin at the United Nations early last week, Obama was not given any advance notice of Russia’s attack plans, aides said. Russian air strikes began two days later, including the targeting of CIA-trained “moderate” anti-Assad rebels, though Moscow insisted it only hit Islamic State insurgents.
“They did not expect the speed with which Putin ramped things up,” said Michael McFaul, Obama’s former ambassador to Moscow. “He likes the element of surprise.”
U.S. intelligence agencies did closely follow and report to policymakers Russian moves to sharply expand infrastructure at its key air base in Latakia as well as the deployment of heavy equipment, including combat aircraft, to Syria, officials said.
“We’re not mind readers,” the senior administration official said. “We didn’t know when Russia would fly the first sortie, but our analysis of the capabilities that were there was that they were there for a reason.”
However, several other officials said U.S. agencies were behind the curve in assessing how far the Russians intended to go and how quickly they intended to launch operations.
In fact, right up until a White House briefing given shortly after the bombing began, Obama press secretary Josh Earnest declined to draw “firm conclusions” on Russia’s strategy.
    CONFUSION OVER RUSSIAN INTENT
One source suggested that U.S. experts initially thought the Russian build-up might have been more for a military “snap exercise” or a temporary show of force than preparations for sustained, large-scale attacks on Assad’s enemies.
Another official said that after initial review, congressional oversight investigators believe that “information on this was not moving quickly enough through channels” to policymakers.
And another source said there had been a “lag of a week” before agencies began voicing full-throated alarm about imminent Russian military operations.
The senior administration official said, however, that “I don’t think anybody here perceived a gap” in intelligence.
In their reviews of how U.S. intelligence handled the Syria build-up, officials said congressional intelligence committees would examine reports issued by the agencies and question officers involved in the process, according to congressional and national security sources. At the moment, no public hearings are planned, the officials said.
Though the senior administration official denied the intelligence community was paying any less attention to Syria, John Herbst, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, said that not enough intelligence assets had been devoted to analyzing Putin’s “aggressive policies”.
McFaul, who took the view that the Obama administration had been largely on top of the situation as Putin prepared his offensive, said that a faster or more precise intelligence assessment would probably have done little to change the outcome.
“What difference would it make if we had known 48 hours ahead of time?” asked McFaul, who now teaches at Stanford University in California. “There still wouldn’t have been any better options for deterring Putin in Syria.”

Nato has renewed assurances to defend allies in view of the “escalation of Russian military activities” in Syria, the alliance’s secretary-general says.
Jens Stoltenberg said defence ministers had decided to boost response forces to be able to deploy troops speedily.
Nato member Turkey has complained that Russian jets have violated its airspace recently.
Russia has used cruise missiles as well as air strikes in Syria. The Nato chief said Moscow’s position was “unhelpful”.
Announcing the doubling of the size of the Nato Response Force to 40,000, Mr Stoltenberg said: “All of this sends a clear message to all Nato citizens. Nato will defend you, Nato is on the ground, Nato is ready.”
He also urged Moscow to stop backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
    ________________________________________
Analysis: Jonathan Marcus, BBC defence correspondent
Jens Stoltenberg spoke of “a troubling escalation in Russia’s military activities in Syria”. Moscow’s support for the Assad regime, he insisted, was not a constructive policy. While there’s been plenty of condemnation of Moscow here in Brussels, Nato has few options to influence Russian behaviour.
It stands ready to assist Turkey to maintain the integrity of its airspace if requested and Nato is reviewing its naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean, where the Russians already have a small naval flotilla off the Syrian coast.
Vladimir Putin’s more assertive stance – first in Ukraine and now in Syria – continues to worry Nato members who share borders with Russia.
    More analysis:
    • What is Russia’s endgame in Syria? – Defeat anti-Assad rebels and be an equal at peace talks
    • High-stakes gamble – Incursions highlight the risk of a clash
    • What can Russia’s air campaign achieve? – Why should Russia be able to do any better than the US-led coalition?
    ________________________________________
Moscow denies Western accusations that it has mainly targeted Assad opponents, insisting its strikes have hit the infrastructure of the so-called Islamic State (IS) and other militant groups.
But a Saudi government official told the BBC that in response to the Russian air strikes in Syria, it was stepping up its supply of weaponry to three anti-Assad rebel groups there.
The official said the Free Syrian Army, Jaysh al-Fatah and Southern Front would get increased supplies of modern, high-powered weaponry, including guided anti-tank weapons.
IS militants have seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq.
A US-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes against IS fighters in both Syria and Iraq for months. But Western countries support rebels who have been fighting to oust Mr Assad since 2011.
The Russian air strikes had “weakened” IS, Syrian Army Chief of Staff Gen Ali Abdullah Ayoub said on Thursday, enabling the army to start a “big attack” to retake towns and villages.
Heavy fighting was reported in areas of Idlib, Hama and Latakia provinces, where a coalition of rebels that includes the Nusra Front operates.
Government-backed troops had moved into the key Ghab plain area, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.
Russia’s defence ministry, quoted by the Interfax news agency, said the Russian air force had hit 27 targets overnight – and that they all belonged to IS.
    ‘Wrong strategy’
Nato ministers met in Brussels amid a deepening sense of crisis, says BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Marcus.
The ministers also addressed increased concern among Baltic member states following Russia’s involvement in eastern Ukraine.
The UK is to station about 100 troops in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania amid tensions with Moscow. It is also sending 25 soldiers to a training mission in Ukraine.
Mr Stoltenberg also announced the creation of new Nato HQ offices in Hungary and Slovakia.
Under Article 5 of Nato’s Washington Treaty, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. This principle of collective defence commits them to protect each other.
On Wednesday, Russia said it had launched missile strikes against IS from warships in the Caspian Sea – about 1,500km (930 miles) away.
Russia’s foreign ministry also said Moscow was willing to establish contact with the Free Syrian Army – a Western-backed rebel group – to discuss fighting IS “and other terrorist groups”.
But US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said coalition forces fighting IS in Syria would not co-operate with Russia.
“We believe Russia has the wrong strategy,” he said. “They continue to hit targets that are not IS.”
Russia’s air campaign in Syria has raised fears of accidental contact between Russian warplanes and those of the US-led coalition which have been targeting IS for the past year.
Pentagon officials revealed they recently had to carry out at least one “safe separation” manoeuvre to avoid a US jet coming too close to a Russian aircraft over Syria.
The Syrian civil war began with an uprising against President Assad in 2011 that was brutally put down.
It has since deteriorated into fighting between pro-government forces and various rebel groups – some of which also fight each other…….

    The New York Times
4 days ago – PRESIDENT OBAMA’S SPEECH TO THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2015 SEPT. 28 2015 … and criticized other western states’ policies in the Middle East. … “Let’s remember how this started,” Mr. Obama said of the Syria conflict.
UNITED NATIONS — The leaders of the United States and Russia traded blunt criticisms on Monday at the United Nations, essentially blaming each other for the catastrophic war in Syria and the refugee crisis it helped to spawn.
The speeches of President Obama, followed more than an hour later by President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, dominated the opening of the annual General Assembly of world leaders.
MR. OBAMA MADE A FORCEFUL DEFENSE OF DIPLOMACY BUT ALSO CASTIGATED RUSSIA BY NAME MULTIPLE TIMES IN HIS SPEECH FOR ITS DEFENSE OF THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT, its takeover of Crimea and its actions supporting Ukrainian rebels.
“Dangerous currents risk pulling us back into a darker, more disordered world,” Mr. Obama said.
Those currents include major powers that want to ignore international rules AND IMPOSE ORDER THROUGH FORCE OF MILITARY POWER, HE SAID.
“In accordance with this logic, we should support tyrants like Bashar al-Assad who drops barrel bombs to massacre innocent civilians because the alternative is surely worse,” he said in comments that seemed to be aimed directly at Mr. Putin.
In what amounted to a basic rebuttal of Mr. Obama, the Russian leader extolled the Syrian leader, saying that he represented stability and that his forces needed support to fight the Islamic State extremists now threatening the region — even though Mr. Assad’s forces are for the most part fighting rebel groups dedicated to his ouster, not the Islamic State militants.
“We think it’s an enormous mistake to refuse to cooperate with the Syrian government and its armed forces who are valiantly fighting terrorism face to face,” Mr. Putin said.
But Mr. Putin, in what appeared to be a step to outmaneuver Mr. Obama on Syria, also spoke of creating “a genuinely broad international coalition” to fight the Islamic State, including a Security Council resolution to “coordinate” military action.
How the United States and its allies will respond to such an idea is unclear. But President François Hollande of France, speaking to reporters later, welcomed the idea of a “broad coalition” and even a Security Council resolution as long as two conditions were met: a stop to the bombings and a “political transition with departure of Assad.” Mr. Hollande did not elaborate on exactly when Mr. Assad would have to leave.
In remarks about foreign Islamic State fighters that seemed clearly aimed at stoking fears in Europe, Mr. Putin said: “We cannot allow these criminals who have already felt the smell of blood to return back home and continue their evil doings. No one wants this to happen, does he?”
Mr. Putin did not hear Mr. Obama speak — the Russian leader had just arrived in New York from Moscow. But the tensions between the two are well known. In a deft bit of diplomacy, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sat in between them during a lunch he hosted for a number of top leaders.
In his toast, Mr. Ban, invoking the saying “There is no such thing as a free lunch,” exhorted his guests to help the United Nations reach the new Sustainable Development Goals for eliminating extreme poverty and hunger by 2030.
Mr. Obama and Mr. Putin clinked glasses after Mr. Ban’s toast.
In his own toast, Mr. Obama praised Mr. Ban and said “We are facing extraordinary challenges today, ones that test our capacity to work together.”
Later in the afternoon Mr. Obama and Mr. Putin posed for photographers before a long-awaited private meeting between the two, which lasted for 95 minutes. They shook hands at the start but made no comments, and the details of their discussions were not immediately disclosed.
In his earlier speech, Mr. Obama also chided China for its expansions in the South China Sea and Iran for its support of Mr. Assad, as well as the broader anti-American messages that emanate from the Iranians.
“Chanting ‘Death to America’ does not create jobs, or make Iran more secure,” Mr. Obama said.
Mr. Obama said that he was realistic, but he said realism had to take into account the brutality of the Assad government in Syria, where war has raged for more than four years.
“Let’s remember how this started,” Mr. Obama said of the Syria conflict. “Assad reacted to peaceful protest by escalating repression and killing and in turn created the environment for the current strife.”
Such violence makes it impossible for the vast majority of Syria’s population to accept Mr. Assad as their leader, Mr. Obama said.
Similarly, Mr. Obama said, a fidelity to international rules required that the United States respond forcefully to Russia’s intervention in Crimea and Ukraine. He said that the United States had few economic interests in the region and understood the long history that Russia had with Crimea and Ukraine.
“But we cannot stand by when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation is flagrantly violated.” He added: “That’s the basis of the sanctions that the United States and our partners imposed on Russia. It’s not a desire to return to the Cold War.”
MR. OBAMA TOLD THE INTERNATIONAL BODY THAT HE COMMANDS THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY FORCE ON THE PLANET. But no matter how powerful its military or strong its economy, the United States could not solve the world’s problems on its own, he said.
He pointed to the war in Iraq where, despite sending more than 100,000 troops and spending trillions of dollars, the United States was unsuccessful in stabilizing the country.
MR. OBAMA EXTOLLED THE DIPLOMATIC COURSE IN WHICH THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER WORLD POWERS had successfully negotiated a nuclear agreement with Iran. And, in one of the first lines to yield cheers, he said that the United States had finally acknowledged that its posture toward Cuba had been wrong and that under his watch, diplomatic relations had been restored.
“As these contacts yield progress, I’m confident that our Congress will inevitably lift an embargo that should not be in place anymore,” he said to cheers. “Change won’t come overnight to Cuba but I’m confident that openness not coercion will support the reforms and better the life that the Cuban people deserve.”
MR. OBAMA MADE A FORCEFUL CASE FOR DEMOCRACY AND POINTED OUT THAT “DICTATORSHIPS ARE UNSTABLE.”
“You can jail your opponents but you can’t imprison ideas,” he said.
President Xi Jinping of China, speaking later in the day, reiterated what he called the Chinese priority of peace and stability for its economic development. He also demonstrated China’s enormous financial influence by announcing a $1 billion fund for the United Nations, and said his country would create a permanent standby peacekeeping contingent of 8,000 police and troops in case it is needed by the world body.
Despite a swooning Russian economy and Western condemnation of Russia’s takeover of Crimea and intervention in Ukraine, MR. PUTIN SEEMS TO HAVE SURPRISED THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WITH AN INTELLIGENCE-SHARING ALLIANCE WITH IRAQ, SYRIA AND IRAN ABOUT THE ISLAMIC STATE MILITANT GROUP THAT OCCUPIES PARTS OF SYRIA AND IRAQ.
The Russians and Americans even squabbled in recent days over who asked whom for the meeting between the two presidents.
Mr. Putin has said that Mr. Assad is a vital bulwark against the Islamic State; Mr. Obama has said that Mr. Assad must leave before the conflict in Syria can be resolved.
President Hassan Rouhani of Iran, in his speech, offered to help to “bring about democracy” in the two conflicts where it has influence, in Syria and Iran, even as he signaled his support for the Russian notion of a Security Council resolution.
“We propose that the fight against terrorism be incorporated into a binding international document and no country be allowed to use terrorism for the purpose of intervention in the affairs of other countries,” Mr. Rouhani said.
Mr. Obama was the first in a line of speakers from the big powers scheduled to speak at the 70th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, where the Syria conflict and its consequences — the spread of Islamic State jihadism and the surge of refugees into Europe — were dominant themes.
In opening the General Assembly, Mr. Ban struck a somber tone, asserting that: “Inequality is growing, TRUST IS FADING, AND IMPATIENCE WITH LEADERSHIP CAN BE SEEN AND FELT FAR AND WIDE.”
The remarks by Mr. Ban, who is approaching his last year as the secretary general, were unusually pointed.
He called to leaders to not stay in power beyond their constitutional terms in office, pressed permanent members of the Security Council to put aside their divisions, called explicitly for an “end to bombings” in Yemen, and named the five countries that, as he said, “hold the key” to peace in Syria: Russia, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey.
Mr. Ban said 100 million civilians are in need of aid, for which the United Nations has pleaded for $20 billion. He rebuked the rich for not giving more, giving examples: One third of what the organization needs for Syria and Iraq has been received and for Gambia, whose children are among the hungriest in the world, nothing has come in.
He stepped up his criticism of countries that shut their borders to refugees. “I urge Europe to do more,” reminding the Continent’s leaders that “after the Second World War it was Europeans seeking assistance.”
He marked two pieces of good news. He praised the nuclear pact that the world powers reached with Iran. And with some relief, he noted that the world had come together to stop the Ebola virus from spreading.
President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, who was the first to speak, scolded those countries that have tried to prohibit refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East, pointing out that Brazil hosts Syrians and Haitians now as it opened the doors to Europeans and Asians a century ago. “In a world where goods, capital, data and ideas flow freely, it is absurd to impede the free flow of people,” she said.

Six months into the coalition air campaign, ISIL has finally been ejected from Kobane, but the hard work of rolling back the group’s territorial gains in Syria and Iraq remains. As airstrikes continue, two distinct approaches are being taken to counter the challenge on the ground. In Iraq, Baghdad and Washington are working to reconstitute and field an integrated Internal Security Force. And in Syria, Iran and the Assad regime are deploying a series of Shiite militias to combat ISIL.

To discuss these differing regional approaches, The Washington Institute is pleased to host a Policy Forum with Michael Knights, Phillip Smyth, and Ambassador Brett McGurk. Watch live starting at 1:00 p.m. EST on Friday, February 6, 2015.

Michael Knights is a Lafer Fellow at the Institute and author of its just-released study The Long Haul: Rebooting U.S. Security Cooperation in Iraq.

Phillip Smyth is a researcher at the University of Maryland and author of the blog Hizballah Cavalcade, which focuses on Shiite Islamist militarism in the Middle East. The Institute will soon release his latest study, The Shiite Jihad in Syria and Its Regional Effects.

    P. J. Dermer is a retired Army colonel who served multiple tours in the Middle East, including two in Iraq. He participated in standing up both civil and defense institutions in Iraq and served as the senior military advisor for reconciliation and to Iraqi forces in Baghdad in 2008. Since retiring from the military, he has worked in Iraq in private business development and consulting.

Washington Institute for Near East Policy

Phillip Smyth is a researcher at the University of Maryland. He writes the blog Hizballah Cavalcade, which focuses on Shiite Islamist militarism in the Middle East …

Phillip Smyth, a terrorism researcher at the University of Maryland, said Obama’s history of reluctance was born out of a post-9/11 reality, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which “crafted a presidency where there was a pushback to earlier policies. Obama’s own worldview aside, many Americans felt that after years of fighting, the best solution was to just pull out and allow other powers to pick up the slack.”

Smyth added that in lieu of the United States “acting unilaterally or leading from the front,” it clearly took a “backseat” approach.

Rodban said: “In many circles, analysts now consider America’s response to 9/11 to be an overreaction that pulled the country into two wars that it couldn’t win, against an amorphous enemy it couldn’t beat. As a candidate, Senator Obama criticized the Bush doctrine and promised to end America’s wars, reverse what he saw as the previous administration’s overreach, and end the notion that the United States is the world’s policeman.” Rodban added that “the Obama doctrine has mainly been defined by what it’s not.”

Regarding the Syrian crisis, Smyth said there was collective “paralysis in many circles, and in others poorly hashed-out strategies” that stemmed from “the will to not really be involved.” He added that “9/11 in some ways blinded policy-makers, since it helped craft a simpler narrative of the United States versus an evil actor.”

Obama’s presidency has been marked by a strong hesitation to engage in any fight that the United States cannot win. However, he may have just entered one against an ambiguous entity and ideology whose very nature makes it virtually impossible to gauge progress or success in defeating.

Despite years of Obama attempting to disengage from the region, on the 13th anniversary of 9/11 his speech highlighted the fact that a U.S. foreign policy marked mostly by inertia has little place long-term in the Middle East.

  • To Kilmer on FEMA Flood Ins.

    Derek,

Halting and/or delaying the increased cost of FEMA flood Insurance is NOT a solution, it is just another example of KICKING A $27 BILLION DOLLAR CAN DOWN THE ROAD.

JUST, another example of a delay, to give congress time to create another arbitrary solution and create legislation to make all American taxpayer’s financially responsible for someone else’s personal problem.

    What difference does it make?

Sen. Landrieu blasts White House for opposition to bill delaying flood insurance premium increases http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/01/sen_landrieu_blasts_white_hous.html

    Updated January 28, 2014 at 2:44 PM

“Delaying implementation of these reforms would further erode the financial position of the National Flood Insurance Program, which is already $24 BILLION IN DEBT,” the Office of Management and Budget said on behalf of the White House

“The flood insurance program is $27 BILLION IN DEBT,” Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., said Monday. “I recognize that some flood insurance rate increases under Biggert-Waters could be painful to certain homeowners.

WASHINGTON — Sen Mary Landrieu . , D-La., Tuesday sharply criticized what she called theObama administration’s “short-sighted, misguided and irresponsible” opposition to legislation delaying flood insurance premium increases for four years.

Though the statement of administration policy didn’t include a veto threat, Landrieu said the White House’s position, “threatens the very foundation of the National Flood Insurance Program and will only saddle taxpayers with higher costs when disasters strike.”

Just before the White House policy statement was released the Senate voted 86-13 to begin debate on legislation that would delay most increases resulting from the 2012 Biggert-Waters Act so, sponsors say, FEMA can complete an affordability study and Congress can work to insure that policyholders don’t face unaffordable flood insurance premiums. The bill’s sponsors said people will be priced out of the flood insurance program if premium increases contemplated by FEMA under Biggert-Waters are implemented — putting taxpayers on the line to help out homeowners devastated by future hurricanes and storms.

“How this Administration thinks it can ‘ensure that economically distressed policyholders are not unduly burdened’ before it completes the affordability study or certifies that its maps are accurate and reliable is completely mind-boggling,” Landrieu said. “That is exactly the kind of backward and upside-down thinking that got us into this mess in the first place.”

In its statement Monday night, The White House expressed concern about the fiscal impact of the delays on the National Flood Insurance Program.

“Delaying implementation of these reforms would further erode the financial position of the National Flood Insurance Program, which is already $24 billion in debt,” the Office of Management and Budget said on behalf of the White House. “This delay would also reduce FEMA’s ability to pay future claims made by all policyholders.”

Former Sen. J. Bennett Johnston, D-La., who knows a little bit about presidential maneuvering, said he doesn’t see the White House statement blocking the legislation.

“It’s not a setback. If it costs money, they (Office of Management and Budget aides) have to be against it,” Johnston said. But they know how to issue a veto threat, and there is none here. They wouldn’t dare do that to Mary in an election year.”

Johnston also suggests the bill will also pass the House, despite opposition from some influential Republicans, possibly with a modification such as a three-year delay in rate hikes instead of the four-year delay in the current Senate bill. “They don’t want to kill their own Senate candidate,” Johnston said of Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, the GOP’s top challenger to Landrieu.

The Biggert-Waters law was passed by large margins, and won the votes of every Louisiana congressional member. But news of large rate increases facing their constituents has led to efforts to at least delay the increases so Congress can come up with a permanent fix. Landrieu, who is up for re-election in 2014, said she voted for Biggert-Waters because it was incorporated into a large omnibus bill that included legislation to funnel Clean Water Act fines from the 2010 BP oil spill to the Gulf CoStill, she spoke out against the bill during Senate debate, warning Congress would have to reconsider the issue soon to fix the obvious problems with the law — mainly, in her view, its failure to consider affordability a key factor in whether people will sign up for flood insurance.

“I know the President is coming to the Capitol tonight to talk about expanding opportunities for the middle class,” Landrieu said. “He can start by joining our strong, deep and broad coalition’s efforts to support the millions of families and businesses that are on the edge of losing everything they have worked for through no fault of their own.”

“They wouldn’t dare do that to Mary in an election year,” former Sen. J. Bennett Johnston on why Obama won’t veto flood insurance bill.

The Obama administration statement said that “FEMA is working diligently with the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a study on insurance affordability for economically distressed policyholders.”

“The Administration recognizes that many policyholders may be challenged financially by the new rates and remains committed to working with the Congress to develop approaches that ensure economically distressed policyholders are not unduly burdened while maintaining the financial stability of the NFIP,” the statement said.

The statement didn’t express outright opposition to the legislation, as some previous statements on other bills have.

Cassidy, Landrieu’s leading opponent in the 2014 Senate race,  also criticized the White House statement.

“It is disappointing that the President does not understand that how FEMA is interpreting Biggert-Waters is contributing to the unaffordability of flood insurance,” Cassidy said. “Millions of homeowners, including many Louisianans, are suffering due to FEMA’s implementation of the Biggert-Waters Act.”

Congress recently passed a bill sponsored by Cassidy that delays some of the increase through Sept. 30, 2014. But he says a more comprehensive bill is needed, particularly to help people who are faced with immediate increases if they sell their homes. It has made some homes unsellable, according to realtors.

Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. and a leader of the nationwide Coalition for Sustainable Flood Insurance, also criticized the White House opposition.

“On the eve of the State of the Union, an address that will reportedly focus on ‘the middle class, the economy and economic fairness,’ it is inexplicable that the Administration and FEMA have come out with a statement opposing common-sense delays to out-of-control flood insurance premiums,” Hecht said.

The Senate could vote on the bill delaying premium increases for four years, and several amendments, including one by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., by Wednesday night or Thursday morning. His amendment would eliminate the four-year delay in rate hikes, and instead phase in rate increases at 25 percent of existing rates each year for four years. Under Biggert-Waters, the annual increases are either 20 or 25 percent of the difference between the current rate and the anticipated new rate resulting from the Biggert-Waters changes.

“The flood insurance program is $27 billion in debt,” Toomey said Monday. “I recognize that some flood insurance rate increases under Biggert-Waters could be painful to certain homeowners. That’s why I suggest a slower phase-in for rate increases triggered by a home sale and for properties most dramatically affected by remapping.”

The 86 votes to begin debate on the delaying legislation showed how the flood insurance rate increases resulting from Biggert-Waters had drawn concern across the United States. Still, there’s some strong opposition. Thirteen senators, all Republicans, voted against allowing debate to begin: Sens. John Barrasso, R-Wy.; Tom Coburn, R-Ok.; Bob Corker, R-Tenn.; Mike Crapo, R-Idaho; Mike Enzi, R-Wy.; Dean Heller, R-Nev.; James Inhofe, R-Ok.; Mike Lee, R-Ut.; Jerry Moran, R-Ks.; Rand Paul, R-Ky.; Pat Roberts, R-Kan.; and Richard Shelby, R-Ala. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa., did not vote.

Landrieu used her remarks on the Senate floor, to say that Pennsylvania is having more flood insurance remaps, 1,425, than any other state — meaning his constituents will be among the most impacted by Biggert-Waters.

    And, then there is this

Is FEMA shortchanging Hurricane Sandy victims?

     http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/investigators&id=9429405

      Eyewitness News

NEW YORK (WABC) — The agency whose mission is to help speed recovery after disastrous storms may in fact be preventing families left homeless by Sandy from rebuilding.

Our investigation has found that on Long Island FEMA appears to be undercutting on insurance claims leaving families no better off than they were days after the 2012 storm.

Nearly a year-and-half after Sandy, Kathy Gullo still lives in a trailer. What was left of her home, she had torn down after 4 different engineering inspectors came to the same conclusion: it should be demolished and rebuilt.

Hoffer: Engineer after engineer, said it is less costly and safer if you rebuild? Gullo: Than try to fix it. Hoffer: Everyone except for the insurance company? Gullo: Except for the insurance company.

Although she had coverage for $300-thousand dollars in flood damage, she only received $138-thousand dollars from FEMA’s Flood Insurance Program which pays the vast majority of Sandy flood claims.

“We’ve been trying to get them to understand that they didn’t do the right thing and we’re waiting for more money before we can even start,” Gullo said.

Hoffer: I can put my hand in this crack. I can see outside. Peter Mastrandrea: Yeah.

Two engineer reports blame the “flood surge” for cracking Peter Mastrandrea’s foundation making his home in Massapequa ”unsafe for habitation,” but FEMA’s engineer found the cracks were not caused by pre-existing conditions. FEMA agreed to pay Peter $46-thousand.

Mastrandrea: It’s criminal. Hoffer: You thought you were covered? Mastrandrea: Evidently I wasn’t. Neither were thousands of other people.

Christa Higbee of Wantaugh had to use her entire 401k retirement money to fund repairs to her home after FEMA insurance gave her $70-thousand dollars for what was nearly $300-thousand in damages.

Hoffer: You whole floor is ruined? Higbee: Demolished everything. We won’t be retiring forever. I’m sure of it because of this.

These stories and those of many other families we’ve spoken to suggests FEMA is underpaying on claims on a massive scale. David Charles worked as an adjuster for 36 years. He’s now an advocate for homeowners and he says the underpayment on Sandy claims by FEMA is the worst he’s ever seen.

“These people have had their rug pulled out from under them by all kinds of tricky techniques to not pay claims. It’s just wrong,” Charles said.

HE’S CONVINCED FAMILIES DISPLACED BY SANDY ARE PAYING FOR THE SINS OF KATRINA IN WHICH LAX OVERSIGHT LED TO HUGE WASTE THAT HAS LEFT FEMA’S FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM $24 BILLION DOLLARS IN THE RED.

    Release date:  October 22, 2012 Release Number: DR-1603/07 – 986

To date, FEMA has obligated approximately $6.4 billion in public assistance funding for Katrina and Rita related recovery work throughout the city of New Orleans.

The actual cost of Hurricane Katrina’s damage http://useconomy.about.com/od/grossdomesticproduct/f/katrina_damage.htm

The Louisiana death toll was 1,836 people. Old age was a contributing factor, since 71% of those who died were 60 years or older, while nearly half of those were more than seventy-five. Sadly, at least 68 were found in nursing homes, possibly abandoned by their caretakers. After the disaster, nearly 200 bodies were left unclaimed. Over 700 people were unaccounted for. The storm killed or made homeless 600,000 pets. (Source: HurricaneKatrinaRelief.com, Fox Facts )

The actual cost of Hurricane Katrina’s damage was between $96-$125 billion, with $40-$66 billion in insured losses. Half of these losses were a result of flooding in New Orleans. An estimated 300,000 homes were destroyed or otherwise made uninhabitable.

If FEMA only paid out $6.4 Billion?  Who else covered the balance of the  $40-$66 billion in insured losses?

Eyewitness News NEW YORK (WABC) –continued

“Real injustice. The financial ruin for many families that just don’t deserve it and believed that they had good coverage,” he said.

Our investigation has found that the average claim payment by FEMA to New Yorkers for Sandy damages is $64-thousand dollars. That’s around the same amount as this couple received from FEMA even though the cost to repair all the damage to their home is estimated at $240-thousand dollars.

“We had a false sense of security that we had homeowners and flood insurance and in the events of something like this they would make good and help us rebuild and instead 15 months later we are homeless,” Richard Santeramo of Wantaugh said.

    I received this on
Jan. 10, 2014 Dear Ms. Hewett,

Thank you for taking the time to contact me and for giving me this opportunity to respond. Every day, I represent the people of Washington State in the United States Senate. This is an incredible honor, and I appreciate hearing from you.

I believe that both parties must come together and look outside of government for solutions to the challenges we face. This is one of the reasons why I place such a high value on the comments and ideas Washington State residents send me each day. Looking them over, I have no doubt that the residents of our state will continue to be national leaders in innovation, efficiency, and smart solutions to tough problems.

I was elected to the United States Senate on a pledge to honor the hard work, aspirations, and faith of the people of Washington State. During my tenure, I have been proud to work across party lines and in partnership with local businesses, individuals, and communities in Washington State. Together, we have supported economic growth, preserved the environment, fostered innovation, and improved national security.

I am particularly proud of our work to support job creation and get Washingtonians back to work. Recently, we worked together as a delegation to fight unfair foreign competition and help Boeing win the KC-46A tanker contract that means up to 11,000 jobs across Washington state. But the work is not over. Over the next decade, our state will need 20,000 new aerospace workers. I am proud to have worked with businesses and organizations across the state to support the Air Washington program that will help train 2,600 aerospace workers at Washington community colleges.

We also have made progress in providing educational and training opportunities that enable Washingtonians to find quality jobs. We fought to keep college affordable and to prepare our students for the 21st century economy by expanding Pell Grants and supporting more science and math education in schools. And we just recently extended tax credits of up to $9,600 for businesses that hire veterans.

And we’ve worked to provide predictability for Washington families and businesses. In recent years, we have expanded small business lending that enables Main Street businesses to grow. And this January, we extended the state sales tax deduction that means nearly $500 in tax savings for 950,000 Washington filers.

Our state and our country still face serious challenges as we emerge from the recession. The economic downturn started on Wall Street, but it will be turned around on Main Street. That is why I am continuing to fight to create jobs and support small businesses. I am also working to eliminate waste and improve government efficiency, while protecting our seniors, military, infrastructure and proven job-creation programs.

    Sincerely,
    Maria Cantwell
    United States Senator

  • Maria Cantwell on NSA

Jan. 10, 2014 Dear Ms. Hewett,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs. I appreciate hearing from you on this matter.

It may interest you to know that on August 9, 2013, President Obama held a press conference in which he announced his willingness to work with Congress on legislation to increase transparency and oversight in anti-terrorism data collection programs. In addition, President Obama expressed his support for an overhaul of the Patriot Act (P.L. 109-177) to limit phone record collection programs within the National Surveillance Agency. President Obama also supports changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which reviews and grants warrants for government surveillance, to create a more open process and expand privacy safeguards. I look forward to working with my colleagues on developing solutions that provide greater transparency in data collection and surveillance programs.

On June 8, 2013, the press exposed, and the Obama Administration acknowledged, that the National Security Agency (NSA) is collecting data associated with millions of American citizens’ phone records, including phone numbers, locations, and duration of calls. Additionally, reports revealed the existence of the NSA’s “PRISM,” a government computer system used to facilitate the collection of foreign intelligence information from U.S.-based electronic communications service providers.

I find these reports deeply troubling. On June 12, 2013, I signed onto a letter sent to the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent agency created by Congress, charged with conducting oversight of the Executive branch to ensure its actions balance the need to protect our nation’s security, while preserving individual privacy and civil liberties. The letter requests that the Board determine whether the NSA’s actions were conducted within the authority granted by Congress and that the necessary precautions to protect the privacy and civil liberties of American citizens under the U.S. Constitution were taken. Additionally, I am looking very closely at legislation that has recently been introduced to address concerns as a result of this data collection.

In 2008, I opposed the Protection of America Act of 2007 (P.L. 110-55) and the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-261) for, among other things, concerns over civil liberties protections. On December 28, 2012, I voted against final passage of the FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 (P.L. 112-238). I had significant concerns that this bill did not adequately protect the constitutional rights of American citizens. Furthermore, the bill gives federal agencies authority to continue warrantless wiretapping programs, which allows for eavesdropping on communications and review of emails without an open warrant process. Despite my objections, the FISA Amendments Act was passed by the Senate by a vote of 73 to 23, and was signed into law by President Obama on December 30, 2012.

As you may know, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) of 1978 was enacted after a series of U.S. Senate hearings revealed Central Intelligence Agency abuses throughout the 1970s. This law sets requirements for physical and electronic surveillance and provides for judicial oversight for most federal wiretapping conducted in the United States.

I believe we must take necessary actions to defeat terrorists both overseas as well as here in the United States. We must also stop those here in the U.S. who are helping terrorists overseas, but we should do so in a way that is consistent with the U.S. Constitution and that protects the privacy of law-abiding Americans.

I believe we can protect both our national security and our civil liberties. To do that there must be oversight of government and anti-terrorism programs to ensure that civil liberties are indeed protected.

    Sincerely,
    Maria Cantwell
    United States Senator
