Chicago Violence: Silent March Memorializes More Than 760 Killed

After Saturday’s march on New Years Day 2016, the 760  crosses will be placed in a vacant lot on the Chicago’s South Side.

President and Mrs. Obama, with the eyes of the nation and the world upon the devastation in Chicago, the time has come to stand with courage and certainty to answer the question

Will Obama’s next Executive Order  be to send in federal dump trucks, pick up the crosses  and destroy them because they might offend someone?

Must your answer be the same as the mantra of your Presidency—a resounding “YES I CAN!  I’VE GOT A PEN!”

CHICAGO — Hundreds of people carried crosses Saturday for each person slain in Chicago this year during a quiet march along Michigan Avenue.

The 3-foot-tall crosses were each engraved with the name of a homicide victim. The silence of the march was punctuated by demonstrators who spoke each name aloud. Authorities say more than 760 people were killed in Chicago in 2016. There were fewer than 500 homicides in the city last year.

March organizer the Rev. Michael Pfleger said he hopes the visuals of the protest along Chicago’s premiere retail street will inspire people to take action to reduce violence in 2017.

“This is a Chicago problem,” Pfleger said. “The reason we’re on Michigan Avenue is because this is a Chicago problem. And until everybody in Chicago decides it’s their problem we’re not going to end it.”

Before the march Kelly Fitzgerald Clark found a cross with the name of her late husband. She cried as her son waded into a sea of crosses and retrieved it.

“WE THOUGHT NOBODY CARED,” SHE SAID. “I LOST MY HUSBAND IN FEBRUARY. HOMICIDE. WE DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS GOING TO BE LIKE THIS.”

THE CROSSES WERE MADE BY GREG ZANIS, OF AURORA.

“I JUST WANT TO TELL EVERYBODY MY HEART’S BROKEN FOR YOU,” ZANIS SAID. “I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO BUT I DID A LITTLE BIT OF WORK FOR YOU GUYS.”

After Saturday’s march, the crosses will be placed in a vacant lot on the city’s South Side.

VIOLENCE IN AMERICA IS A NATIONAL PROBLEM NOT JUST A CHICAGO PROBLEM.

Chicago is just one example of Obama’s failed government leadership 2009-2016

THE MOST BASIC DUTY OF GOVERNMENT IS TO DEFEND THE LIVES OF ITS OWN CITIZENS. ANY GOVERNMENT THAT FAILS TO DO SO IS A GOVERNMENT UNWORTHY TO LEAD.

The chiefly black South Side of Chicago is in a Depression. The problems have persisted for years and have grown worse.

In 2009 published reports, 508 Chicago children were shot during a 16 month span with 25 killed.

VINCENT J. BOVE On Oct. 6, 2009 I addressed the Chicago crisis with registered letters to President Obama, the U.S. Department of Justice, and numerous officials of Chicago and the State of Illinois. OCTOBER 6, 2009 CALLING ON PRESIDENT OBAMA TO COMMIT RESOURCES TO STOP THE VIOLENCE IN CHICAGO

LETTER TO PRESIDENT AND MRS. OBAMA

    October 6, 2009

    President and Mrs. Obama
    The White House
    1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
    Washington, DC 20500

    Dear President and Mrs. Obama,

Now that lobbying for hosting the 2016 Olympic Games is behind us, a more urgent task is at hand. It is time for an Olympian effort to end the bloodshed plaguing the communities of Chicago.

I implore you to make the elimination of violence in the windy city a top priority of your administration. If we agree that it would have been a worthwhile investment to prepare the city to host the 2016 Olympics, how much more is the value of human life? We must work to find a way to save lives, reduce hostility, and create a national model for the “audacity of hope” in all our urban areas suffering the scourge of senseless brutality.

So I propose that the White House declare a Stop the Violence Olympics for Chicago. As immediately as is possible, an organizing effort should be made on the same scale as would have been necessary to prepare the city for the Olympics. Resources from throughout government, private industry, and the local community must be brought together in a collaborative effort that will serve notice that violence will no longer be tolerated.

In addition, a torch should be lit in the city and remain burning as a reminder and symbol to all that we are serious about bringing change and hope to the affected Chicago communities.

President and Mrs. Obama, with the eyes of the nation and the world upon the devastation in Chicago, the time has come to stand with courage and certainty to answer the question “Can they stop the violence on the streets of Chicago?”

The only answer must be the same as the mantra of your Presidency—a resounding “YES WE CAN!”

    Respectfully,

    Vincent J.Bove

More Shooting Deaths in Chicago than in Afghanistan So Far This Year

On June 25, 2012, the New York Times ran a front page story about the 38% rise in killings in Chicago. Most of the deaths were due to black on black crime. Again, Chicago has a lot of crime, and it is not limited to black communities, but the fact is that crime is concentrated in gang dominated black communities and in non-black communities where non-black gangs have taken hold. Gang warfare has exacerbated the problem:

Feb 2, 2015 – … “A Methodological Guide to the Application of the Notion of Common Core in the Training of Various Categories of Educational Personnel.

That’s it. I’m done. I am refusing to allow my children to participate in any Common Core-related assessments, surveys, tests – anything, now that testing has begun in earnest in our schools.

    Here’s why.

The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) was founded in 1945. Its educational objectives are to “support the achievement of Education for All; to provide global and regional leadership in education; to strengthen education systems worldwide from early childhood to the adult years; and to respond to contemporary global challenges through education.”

As the only United Nations agency with a mandate to cover all aspects of education, UNESCO’s work encompasses educational development from pre-school through higher education, including technical and vocational education and training, non-formal education, and literacy.

The organization says it focuses on “increasing equity and access, improving quality, and ensuring that education develops knowledge and skills in areas such as sustainable development, HIV and AIDS, human rights and gender equality. UNESCO works with governments and a wide range of partners to make education systems more effective through policy change.” It coordinates the “Education for All movement, tracks education trends and raises the profile of educational needs on global development agendas.”

So our children are being herded into “global development agendas” that our and other governments deem fit.

Alex Newman, a correspondent for The New American, noted that in 1949, UNESCO printed a pamphlet on using the classroom to promote “world understanding,” stating, “As long as the child breathes the poisoned air of nationalism, education in world-mindedness can only produce precarious results.” So, to deal with that, schools should use various means to “combat family attitudes.”

By 1984, J.C. Pauvert had penned a document for UNESCO’s Division of Higher Education and Training of Educational Personnel entitled “A Methodological Guide to the Application of the Notion of Common Core in the Training of Various Categories of Educational Personnel.” It discusses the origins of “the notion of the common core as a process of transmission of knowledge, skills, or behavior that always involves comparable psychological mechanisms, set in motion by identical intentions, guided by learning objectives, put into practice in accordance with strategies and subjected to procedures of evaluation which are also comparable.”

In 2005, Phyllis Schlafly wrote the following in Issues and Action in Education: “President Reagan withdrew the United States from UNESCO in December of 1984 because it was corrupt, anti-Western, and a vehicle for far-left propaganda. Unfortunately, President George W. Bush rejoined UNESCO in 2003, and it’s now found a long sought after means to influence U.S. school curriculum.

“On November 17, 2004 at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, UNESCO signed a 26-page, five year Cooperation Agreement with Microsoft Corporation to develop a ‘master curriculum (Syllabus)’ for teacher training in information technologies based on standards, guidelines, benchmarks, and assessment techniques. It states that the Syllabus will ‘form the basis for deriving training content to be delivered to teachers,’ and ‘UNESCO will explore how to facilitate content development.’ UNESCO Director General Matsuura confirmed that one of the Agreement’s goals is to foster content development, and create a worldwide curricula reflecting UNESCO values. No doubt that is agreeable to Bill Gates because the Agreement states that Microsoft supports the objectives of UNESCO.”

The Gates Foundation then went on to underwrite the organizations that were writing the Common Core standards: the National Governors Association, David Coleman’s Student Achievement Partners, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and Achieve Inc. Those four organizations, primarily responsible for development of the Common Core State Standards, have thus far taken $147.9 million in funding from Bill Gates. And I haven’t even touched on the data collection.

In 2010, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, gave a speech at UNESCO in Paris entitled “The Vision of Education Reform in the United States,” where he discussed “new partnerships,” which, he stated, “must inspire students to take a bigger and deeper view of their civic obligations – not only to their countries of origin, but to the betterment of the global community. A just and socially responsible society must also be anchored in civic engagement for the public good.”

Duncan went on to call the governance of education in the United States “unusual,” in that the federal government has had (past tense) a limited role in education policy, and that he and the president have a “cradle-to-career education agenda.” He stated outright that the Obama administration has sought to fundamentally shift the federal role.

So I’m calling on Gov. Paul LePage to end Maine’s participation in the Common Core State Standards, and to bring back local control.

In the meantime, state Rep. Sara Gideon, a Freeport Democrat who is the assistant House majority leader, recently told MPBN’s Jay Field that “right now, parents do have an option.” She said a U.S. Supreme Court decision gives parents the right to opt kids out of standardized tests.

“The issue is that, in Maine, we don’t have anything in state law that makes this clear,” Gideon said. So she is sponsoring a bill that makes it clear, under state law, that parents have this option, and requires teachers and school administrators to let them know about it.

Rep. Gideon, you are officially my favorite Democrat.

Does IQ Beat EQ? Wrong Question.

After 100 years of research, there’s little agreement on the definition of intelligence or how to measure IQ. Yet Adam Grant insists cognitive skill TRUMPS all, and “Emotional Intelligence Is Overrated.” His critique is wrong, but important.

His latest post on LinkedIN is a follow up to his Atlantic piece on “The Dark Side of Emotional Intelligence,” where he warns it’s risky to develop emotional competence. For example, he even speculates that Hitler used emotional intelligence to manipulate people into a frenzy of mindless loyalty.

Framing this as “IQ versus EQ” demonstrates neither. At any meeting, any dinner table conversation, it’s obvious that these aspects of intelligence need to work together. The ability to conduct complex analysis is hobbled (and dangerous) without the ability to connect meaningfully with other human beings. The ability to sense and manage emotion is nearly useless without the ability make meaning from rational observation.

Traditional psychological research has treated emotion and cognition as separate, even competitive. The current trend in neuroscience says something new, and powerful: Thoughts and feelings are interdependent.

Is IQ better than EQ? That’s the wrong question.

    Click To Tweet

    Emotions Drive People

That said, in the human brain, no signal is more powerful than emotion. Emotion is a primary filter; it’s a signal of survival. Any high school teacher can tell you: Algebra can’t compete with love. As a growing body of neuroeconomics research shows, we make decisions with emotion, then justify those with logic. Obviously, we’ll do a better job in that process if IQ and EQ work together.

Science is a process of mounting evidence. Grant cites a couple of studies to support his opinion, but the real test comes from hundreds. While there certainly are studies that find EQ to have little value, and studies that find IQ to be essential, today Google Scholar lists over a hundred thousand studies on emotional intelligence. The evidence is growing. The interest in EQ as an important construct is indisputable.

In your brain, emotion has primacy

    The Evidence for Emotional Intelligence

This year, for the first time, a “big data” approach was used to assess the significance of emotional intelligence around the globe. Using a random-sampling process from a database of over 75,000 people, Six Seconds created a sample that’s balanced across age, gender, role and region to publish The State of the Heart Report. Assessing both EQ and performance outcomes (e.g., effectiveness, relationships, decision-making). The result: Between 50-60% of variation in these performance scores are predicted by EQ.

While Grant says EQ is unimportant on the job, The Business Case for Emotional Intelligence and The School Case for Emotional Intelligence, scores of studies say otherwise. Perhaps more importantly, in real-world examples, in people’s daily lives, we can see emotional intelligence skills improve performance at work, in school, and in life. They predict career success, school success, classroom behavior, stress management, leadership influence, employee engagement & performance, plant safety, change leadership, employee retention and even life success for professional athletes.

Even more, emotional intelligence is an enabler of cognitive development. Looking at the fascinating body of neuro-learning research from Mary Helen Immordino Yang and other cognitive neuroscientists (see Medina’s Brain Rules for a good intro), a new perspective emerges: at a neurological level, thinking and emotion work together. We don’t “think” with one part of the brain and “feel” with another; the process of learning is built into the very same neural circuits as the process of social-emotional interaction.

Intelligence is built in the social brain

    Click To Tweet

Is EQ More Important than IQ?

None of this is to say that IQ is unimportant. In education and business we ALREADY focus on IQ. For the last hundred+ years, cognitive development has been the primary goal of education: we have seen IQ scores increase by two standard deviations over the last century (that means a “somewhat smart person today” would be a “genius” in 1915). This “Flynn Effect” suggests (a) that IQ tests don’t actually measure intelligence, and (b) that around the world massive attention is given to cognitive development.

Growing IQ is helping us in many ways (creating innovations such as tiny computers that can be inserted into our hearts). At the same time, all this attention to IQ hasn’t solved other of the world’s most pressing problems (from poverty to environmental destruction to divorce to war). In fact, people today are more stressed, more lonely, and therefore less able to solve problems.

Here in Silicon Valley, you can throw a rock and hit a building full of uber-intelligent engineers. These people are painfully smart – they graduated or dropped out from the top universities, they are only hired if they have good-to-scary levels of IQ. So now what? As Daniel Goleman explained in his rebuttal to Grant’s article (which includes a link to that piece), IQ gets you hired, but EQ gets you promoted.

You need IQ to get hired, EQ to get promoted

    Click To Tweet

The Dark Side of Emotional Intelligence

While Grant’s LinkedIN post is deliberately hostile (promotional intelligence?), his Atlantic article has a more thoughtful and important point. Capabilities can be misused. So should we avoid these skills? The Taliban knows that educated girls will eventually overthrow the regime, so they suppress education to keep this “danger” at bay. Is that the approach we want to take emotional skill, or about any area of knowledge?

Emotional intelligence is a tool. Can someone misuse it? Sure. A baseball bat is for play, but in the wrong hands… One can make the danger argument for any skill, but it doesn’t make it inherently dangerous. There is nothing inherently manipulative about understanding one’s emotions and using that understanding for better decision making. The only real path forward is wisdom.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, OR EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT (EQ), is defined as an individual’s ability to identify, evaluate, control, and express emotions. PEOPLE WITH HIGH EQ USUALLY MAKE GREAT LEADERS AND TEAM PLAYERS BECAUSE OF THEIR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND, EMPATHIZE, AND CONNECT WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM.
