Today, Stonewall Jackson. Tomorrow, Michael, Reggie and Jackson Hole

Some may see this as a pell-mell rush to replicate George Orwell’s “1984,” in which “every statue and street and building has been renamed.” But I don’t think it goes far enough.

If something is worth doing in America, it’s worth overdoing.

ESPN proved this eternal truth anew this week when it announced that, in response to the violence in Charlottesville, it was removing announcer Robert Lee from broadcasting the University of Virginia football game in Charlottesville — because he has the same name as the Confederate commander Robert E. Lee. ESPN’s Lee is Asian American.

Detailed summary of George Orwell Novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) by Colette COLMERAUER : PART 1 Chapter 1 ……

The story of Winston Smith begins on a bright cold day.

He works for the Ministry of Truth, which deals with news, education, entertainment and art.

Added for clarity “1984” …. Winston Smith is a member of the Outer Party. He works in the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth, rewriting and distorting history. To escape Big Brother’s tyranny, at least inside his own mind, Winston begins a diary — an act punishable by death.

    There are three other Ministries:

The Ministry of Plenty dealing with Economic Affairs

The Ministry of Love dealing with law and torture

And, the Ministry of Peace which deals with war and defence

Everywhere in London there are giant posters of a dark eyed man with a moustache and a motto “Big Brother is looking at you”. Winston comes back home from work to his one room apartment.

In this room a big telescreen transmits and receives non-stop information, so that you can be watched or listened to at anytime.

But there is an alcove besides where he believes he cannot be seen. So he sits there and begins writing a journal, on an old book bought in an antiques shop. He writes the date: 4 April 1984.

Similar caution just led the University of Houston to change the name of its Calhoun Lofts dorm because it shares a name with the 19th-century vice president and white supremacist John C. Calhoun, even though, a university spokeswoman told the Houston Chronicle, “the residence hall was not named in recognition of John C. Calhoun” but a nearby street.

In Atlanta, likewise, protesters last week attempted to tear down that city’s Peace Monument, apparently mistaking it for a Confederate shrine. The sculpture was erected to honor those who worked for reunification during Reconstruction.

The movement to remove Confederate monuments can be a healthy one, if done legally, according to the wishes of local citizens and in such a way that preserves this history without glorifying it. But from across this great land come reminders that nothing in America succeeds like excess.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a 90-day review of any statues on city property that could be “symbols of hate.” New Yorkers are now taking aim at the Christopher Columbus statue in Columbus Circle and the tomb of Ulysses S. Grant.

Some object to the Theodore Roosevelt statue outside the Museum of Natural History, and others suggest the name “New York” itself may have to go because the Duke of York was a slave trader. New York chef Tom Colicchio dropped the name of his new restaurant because it was named after a building that was named after 19th-century publishers who had racist views.

There’s a movement in Massachusetts to rename Boston’s Faneuil Hall, cradle of the Revolution, because the 1742 structure was built by a slave trader and owner, Peter Faneuil. Residents of Philadelphia and Seattle, not to be left out, want to remove statues of, respectively, Frank Rizzo and Vladimir Lenin.

Some may see this as a pell-mell rush to replicate George Orwell’s “1984,” in which “every statue and street and building has been renamed.” But I don’t think it goes far enough.

If we are to purge ourselves of Robert E. Lee (and ESPN’s Robert Lee) we must avoid confusion by renaming or replacing all things with names similar to the Confederate general’s: Bruce Lee, Tommy Lee, Spike Lee, Harper Lee, Bobby Lee, Lee jeans, Lee Majors and Lee Iacocca.

It won’t do simply to rename schools named for the Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart. We’re going to have to rename Stuart Little, Stuart the Minion from “Despicable Me,” Jon Stewart, Martha Stewart and Jeb Bush. All statues of Jubal Early must come down. So must all things that share names with this Confederate general: early-bird specials, early morning, early retirement, early voting and early NBA-draft entry.

If Confederate hero Nathan Bedford Forrest must go, so must the Redwood forest. Also the Gulf Stream waters. Fort A.P. Hill, an army base named for a Confederate general, must be renamed. So must Capitol Hill, Beacon Hill, Nob Hill, Bunker Hill, the Sugarhill Gang, Blueberry Hill, and Bill and Hill.

Let us dispense with Jefferson Davis, by all means — but take with him Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., Davis Love, the Davis Cup, the University of California at Davis, the Jefferson Hotel, Thomas Jefferson, George Jefferson, Louise “Weezy” Jefferson, Jefferson Pierce (Black Lightning) and especially Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, who also shares a name with Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard. Now that New Orleans has taken down its Beauregard statue, we’re also going to have to relocate Bo Jackson, Bo Derek and Bo Diddley.

Memorials to Confederate Gen. Leonidas Polk cannot be moved without also erasing all trace of President James Polk, polka dances, polka dots, Hawaiian poke and Pokémon. Picket lines must be outlawed and picket fences flattened to avoid honoring Gen. George Pickett, and I will stonewall any attempt to disappear Gen. Thomas Jackson without also renaming Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Reggie Jackson, Percy Jackson, Action Jackson and Jackson Hole.

I regret to say we must also rename my Washington Post colleague Philip Rucker, who shares a name with (though is not related to) Confederate Gen. Edmund Rucker.

That’s asking a lot of Phil, but we all must do our share. I will be demanding a new name for my public high school, Calhoun High School. It’s not named for John C. but for Sanford H., a 20th-century New York school administrator who, to the best of my knowledge, did not own slaves. But you can’t be too careful.

“Politics is the gizzard of society, full of grit and gravel, and the two political parties are its opposite halves – sometimes split into quarters – which grind on each other. Not only individuals but states have thus a confirmed dyspepsia.”

Henry David Thoreau wrote the essay “Civil Disobedience in 1849” to discuss his criticisms of the American government. Thoreau writes about his dislike of the government’s power and rule over the people, his hatred of taxation, and his disbelief in a large government that interferes with the rights of the American citizen. This essay is used as a source to help determine Thoreau’s political stance because it provides accurate information about Thoreau’s personal and political beliefs.

Newsflash From The December ‘Jobs’ Report—–The US Economy Is Dead In The Water, by David Stockman

    Posted on January 10, 2016 | Leave a comment

    From David Stockman at davidstockmanscontracorner.com:

Here’s a newsflash that CNBC didn’t mention. According to the BLS, the US economy generated a miniscule 11,000 jobs in the month of December.

Yet notwithstanding the fact that almost nobody works outdoors any more, the BLS fiction writers added 281,000 to their headline number to cover the “seasonal adjustment.” This is done on the apparent truism that December is generally colder than November and that workers get holiday vacations.

Of course, this December was much warmer, not colder, than average. And that’s not the only deviation from normal seasonal trends.

The Christmas selling season this year, for example, was absolutely not comparable to the ghosts of Christmas past. Bricks and mortar retail is in turmoil and in secular decline due to Amazon and its e-commerce ilk, and this trend is accelerating by the year.

So too, energy and export based sectors have been thrown for a loop in the last few months by a surging dollar and collapsing commodity prices. Likewise, construction activity has been so weak in this cycle—-and for the good reason that both commercial and residential stock is vastly overbuilt owing to two decades of cheap credit—–that its not remotely comparable to historic patterns.

Never mind. The BLS always adds the same big dollop of jobs to the December establishment survey come hell or high water. In fact, the seasonal adjustment has averaged 320,000 for the last 12 years!

For crying out loud, folks, every December is different—–and not just because of the vagaries of the weather. Capitalism is about incessant change and reallocation of economic activity and resources. And now the globalized ebbs and flows of economic activity have only accentuated the rate and intensity of these adjustments.

Yet the statistical wizards at the BLS think they can approximate a seasonal adjustment factor for December that at +/- 300k amounts to just 0.2% of the currently reported 144.2 million establishment survey jobs, and an even smaller fraction of the potential adult work force which is at least 165 million.

But that’s a pretentious stab in the dark. The December seasonal adjustment (SA) could just as easily be 0.3% of the job base or 0.1%, depending upon the specific point in the business cycle and structural trends roiling the economy.

Indeed, these brackets alone would vary the headline SA number by 150k to 450k. The fact that the seasonal adjustment factor for December has oscillated tightly around 300,000 for the last 12 years proves only one thing—–namely, that the bureaucrats at the BLS have chosen to invent the same guesstimate year after year; its not science, its political fiction.

The fact is, the seasonal adjustment factors are about the closest thing there is to pure noise among all the dubious “incoming” data that the Fed and Wall Street obsess over.

    Dear NAYSAYER  (using poetic license)

Sharing a few of my own opinions on your distaste for Mr.Trump along with asking a few questions? and welcoming your feedback as always. I thought this might be good food for thought to share with our group discussion. The count down is near. Just 4 questions.

    1. FIRST OF ALL, I’LL STICK WITH THE TRUMPSTER’ PRESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
    1. New York Values. Perhaps Trump sees a better vision  for  current New York values. He stands behind the 2nd amendment.

Shouldn’t he want to be proud of the state he is from? Do you feel Mr. Trump was responsible for the decline of New York City’s from being the greatest city in the world, to the largest crime capital of the world? Weren’t most cities in America great cities when employment was in demand? Those were the days we so passionately remember growing up in the 50’s. I loved the good old days when it was safe and affordable to move about, go into the cities without fear of getting mugged or killed and enjoy a few pleasures in life.  Wouldn’t you think Mr. Trump would like to see some of those things take place again in New York? Do you feel Mr. Trump had something to do with the creation of the well known New York slums? The Gambling cartels or Drug Mafias? Help me out here because I’m trying to understand. What exactly has he done to link him to the Mafia? It’s it because he had hired lawyers who had also provided representation to Mafia members? It’s not a crime to hire a lawyer who’s considered to be one of the best is it?. If a person can afford one with an outstanding record of representation why wouldn’t he hire that man? Why would he pay for anything less if he didn’t have too? What has he done so wrong? I haven’t cast my ballot yet and I am interested, because I’ve  always respected your opinions and views on most of your input.

    1. My view of the Banana Republic is  I’ve been looking at it for the last 8 years.  Have you shopped online lately?

I respect individual opinions. The ingredients of liberty, right?.  But when that liberty is misinterpreted or skewed to suit ones self. What do we have? Please tell me how Mr. Trump  would encourage the U.S. to morph into a bigger Banana Republic then it already is through it’s online partnerships with the Banana Republic countries? When the TPP mobilizes itself, that’s when the cargo ships will be lining our shores.  You know how the Democrats work, their plans are always well underway before any approval is even asked for. Then the big bomb is dropped.

    1. The figurines in the political arenas in any country  all claim themselves as the one who will make their countries a greater place. Should Mr. Trump feel differently?  Because this has been his campaign slogan, does this mean to you he’s a set in stone  pathological liar or a Hitler  style thug  deserving of those titles? What has he been caught lying about? or do you think he is lying about the ability he may have to find solutions other then the same old song and dance routine of the political correct slugs? I just don’t believe he has had a chance to prove any of those things to be true. He’s not even started in presidency yet. How in your eyes is he compared to Hitler?

    In most recent history

Vivid in our minds are Obamas claims of how great he’d make America.  What’s the result?

Former President Reagan said the same thing. What was the result?  different?

The liberals bashed Ronald for being an ‘ACTOR’ not qualified to hold the office of presidency.  What was the result?

Did he act? Yes he did as best he could, but acted in a real effort to help his troubled country,  without a script written and provided to him for a screen play. What was the result? Better?

Isn’t it wrong to prematurely accuse the accused (Mr. Trump) until those accusations  have already surfaced to be true? or RED FLAGS within the policies he’s presenting?

Can you show me where Mr. Trump has proven to be a pathological liar?

Can you show me where Mr. Trump has committed intentional thuggary against the United States?

Can you show me the comparison of Mr. Trump, to the tyrant Hitler?  who’s biggest intent was to slaughter and exterminate millions of innocent people, by way of brutal inhumane force that left human remains strewn across Europe? to make room for his Arian Nation?

Can you show me where Trump has shown intent to murder citizens who disagree with American ways? or lead all the Mexicans, Syrians or Muslims or whomever else into death camps?

I can’t see much comparison at all, other then both men said they would make their countries into a greater place.  Both also put strength and firmness behind their egos, as a way to deliver their message for greatness in a way that would make people listen.  Not boring sleep speech by any means.

Both men full of spine and guts. BUT Hitler was spineless and gutless without his armies behind him.

Trump has a special kind of spine and guts with no army behind him. He has already risked his life to save you, me and other average citizens under a collapsing society of debt, threats, immorality and vulnerability.

He is a very brave soldier who stands alone, in our own country’s battlefield, with no army’s protecting him and our enemies hating him.  Very heroic. His efforts are highly appreciated by me. Not even most of our own military now serving here within our own borders will stand behind the American abuse that is overthrowing their own government and people. No one else has had the courage to openly face these self appointed gods and call them out on the crimes committed against us, in a blatant manor people can understand by cutting through the political mumbo jumbo. Our nation is mad. Trumps really has been the voice of the people. We are out numbered by the young, Karl. It’s a different world half are stupid and half are mad.  I won’t do stupid and try to learn from my mistakes.    I have a lot of respect for Mr. Trump. How he expresses himself, has nothing to do with what he is capable of accomplishing. It’s time the tone of the Muslim prayer ringing through our American cities change it’s pitch.  Start up the band again, and play our national anthem.

I will say that if Trump was to do, to the terrorist cells, what Hitler did to the Jews, not many would be shedding tears over their lost culture.

That would be a good start for making America great again.  To continue dealing with a problem is not getting rid of the root of it’s cause. The weeds just keep on sprouting.

So that is my challenge to you for the week, my friend.  Are you up to it?

    Cheers

     Dear  NAYSAYER (using poetic license)

I have pitched my tent in Brooke’s camp. I wasn’t always there, I have to admit.

Truly………..it is time for “hope and change”, Trump style.

A message MUST be sent to our 535 “representatives” in Washington, DC that enough is enough!!!!!!!!

This election is about saving America; I really do believe that! Who better to do that than Trump, a political outsider?

America is doomed with 8 years of Hillary staring us in the face!

These are VERY scary times-we can all agree on that!

    Take care my friends!!!!

     Dear  NAYSAYER (using poetic license)

It’s like we fear our own country’s potential for greatness, or we’ve forgotten what it takes to get there, and stay there.

I think the book of Nehemiah demonstrates a good parallel of Trumps approach. Nehemiah stepped up to make Jerusalem great again. It worked then. We’re to the point where only radical leadership will undo the damage and allow for restoration.

Trump didn’t need to do this. He’s choosing to because he loves America, & wants it back on track.

Trump’s not been my 1st Choice, but for the many reasons Trump commenter #1

pointed out, as well as others, I’m really glad he’s our candidate. The people have spoken. And still, so many will not listen to the voices of the Patriots.

Well said, Trump commenter #1 again.

Let’s give this guy  chance. He’s already showing, just by being the only candidate left, that he can get the job done!

    Hi Pearl,

And thanks for your notice and do keep up the good work……

Two days after I put up the two TRUMP signs next to the white fog line on Blue mountain rd. , the signs had been ran over two different times, in two days. So, I fix them ,and mounted them on steel fence posts and inside my fence line………

    Pearl,

I voted for Trump in our silly presidential primary yesterday.  Good thing.  After his verbal attack on Jeff Bezos this am, I am not sure what I would have done.  He sounded envious – – like no one but him should have done well……..and Jeff didn’t start with his mommy and daddy’s money – He did it all himself.
Why Does Donald always have to open his mouth and says things he might not have said if he had only thought first or listened to himself?

Just had to get it off my chest!!

    Hi Pearl,

When I was at GOP headquarters yesterday afternoon, a gentleman stopped by to get a Trump sign, which were out.  So your dropping some off at HQ would be great!  :)  Thanks.

(Hours are normally 10-2, not sure which days the office is manned by volunteers, but it would probably be a good idea to call first.  417-3035.)
