  • Trump Picks Ryan Zinke to Head the DOI?

Yep, Trump Picked Ryan Zinke to Head the DOI

ZINKI’S  IDEA OF HIS DUTY AS THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR AS  SECRETARY IS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE A BROAD CONSENSUS ON WHAT WE’RE DOING

ZINKE IS A RELATIVE POLITICAL NEWCOMER IN WASHINGTON AND TO POLITICS GENERALLY. DURING HIS SHORT TENURE AS A STATE LAWMAKER IN MONTANA, HE DEVELOPED A REPUTATION AS A “MODERATE” ON SOME ISSUES.

ODDLY ENOUGH, AS A POLITICAL NEWCOMER, ZINKE HAS AN EXTENSIVE VOCABULARY OF THE LIBERAL POLITICO ESTABLISHMENTS KEY BUZZ WORDS.

ZINKI’S TOP PRIORITIES WOULD BE TO GIVE LOCAL LAND MANAGERS AND RANGERS MORE FLEXIBILITY IN LAND MANAGEMENT DECISIONS

REALLY, START COOLING OFF TENSION OVER LAND USE

AFTER ABOUT FOUR HOURS OF QUESTIONING  AND COMMENTS  DURING . REP. RYAN ZINKE CONFIRMATION HEARING BEFORE THE SENATE ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE TUESDAY

IT’S ALREADY CLEAR THERE COULD BE SOME FRICTION BETWEEN AN INTERIOR SECRETARY ZINKE AND SOME REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SPENDING.

AND REALLY, ZINKE  PROMISES TO BRING A TEDDY ROOSEVELT-STYLE APPROACH TO MANAGING FEDERAL PUBLIC LANDS?

ZINKE  WENT ON TO SAY THAT HE THOUGHT THE COUNTRY HAS BENEFITED GREATLY FROM A LOT OF NATIONAL MONUMENT DESIGNATIONS, INCLUDING IN HIS HOME STATE OF MONTANA.

ZINKE HINTED AT THE HEARING THAT ONE PRIORITY IN AN EXPECTED TRUMP-BACKED INFRASTRUCTURE BILL WILL BE TO ADDRESS A $12 BILLION BACKLOG IN MAINTENANCE AT NATIONAL PARKS.

ZINKE HINTED? THAT  $12,000,000,000.00 BILLION DOLLAR NATIONAL PARK SERVICE (NPS) BACKLOG FOR MAINTENANCE WOULD BE  A PRIORITY FOR PRESIDENT TRUMP?

PRESIDENT TRUMP WOULD HAVE A RED FLAG PRIORITY ON ANYTHING WITH  $12,000,000,000.00 BILLION DOLLAR AMOUNT ATTACHED TO IT.

$12,000,000,000.00 BILLION DOLLARS IS THE LOW ESTIMATE FOR BUILDING THE WALL.

MY CONSIDERED OPINION IS THAT RYAN ZINKE WOULD SUCK AS THE SECRETARY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, NOT ONLY  DO I  QUESTION, I STRENOUSLY OBJECT TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S PICK REP. RYAN ZINKE, R-MONT TO HEAD THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR (DOI)

This is the hierarchy of power that  President Trump would be giving to Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont. by appointment.

The Human Toll of WA DC Edicts 2012-2016

    ————————————————————————–

    Toni’s  text continued…

Because of federal land-taking, we now have a broken county with a median household income less than the State of Mississippi. My father owned a sawmill here in the 1940’s; anyone who wanted to work could easily find a job. In the 1960’s, Josephine County had 53 sawmills; the revenue for Public Safety was around $18 million per year. Josephine County, Oregon, has relied on the use of our natural resources for Public Safety, Education, and necessary Public Projects. We now live under the constant threat of having to close the jail; and this July we will receive our last congressional subsidy of $4.3 million. Use of our resources has declined to the point that we are now an impoverished county largely dependent on welfare and government social services.

Yesterday—the last remaining sawmill in our county closed indefinitely because they could not get enough logs to fill orders. We’ve gone from 19 sheriff’s patrols to a budget for only three patrols by this summer. Our County government laid off 127 people in 2012; 90 of those people were in the Sheriff’s Department.

All promises from the Federal government to Josephine County have been broken. The government has not honored its commitment in the 1937 O&C Act, and the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service have reduced the timber harvests for two decades.

The BLM and Forest Service close vital roads throughout the county, so that we can’t put out forest fires. Those agencies then refuse to let us log the burnt areas and derive some income from the catastrophe. Management of our lands by Washington, DC, has proved to be a disaster to our county, both in terms of revenue for necessary services and in terms of modern forest management practices for sustainability.

The EPA runs roughshod over our private and public lands; overly-zealous environmental activists derive much of their income from government grants. Environmental groups consistently portray logging as environmentally-destructive “clear-cutting”, when in fact, timber companies in Oregon are well-known for responsible, sustainable forest management.

With this loss of use of our land to generate revenue and provide jobs come many of the predictable social problems, as indicated on the following page: drug abuse, health problems, rise in student dropout rate, children living in poverty, increased homelessness, and reliance on welfare subsidies. This is the result of not having control and benefit of our county land.

Poverty in Josephine County has reached the point that we cannot pass a property tax levy to fund public safety. Having bare bones public safety negatively impacts our ability to retain and attract businesses and qualified workers.

We would appreciate the support of Presidential Candidate Donald Trump for the transfer of our lands from federal mismanagement. We need your help to prevent further loss and to reverse the losses that have plunged our county into poverty. Whichever candidate emerges from the Presidential race, we will be looking to support the candidate who will be in favor of transferring the control of public lands to the states. If you want to Make America Great Again, start with Josephine County and help us help ourselves.

    Thank you and Best Wishes,
    Toni Webb

Human toll of Washington D.C. edicts — especially Siskiyou Co.

    by Liz Bowen

PNP comment: The below info was recently brought to our attention by Pearl Hewett in Clallam County, Washington, who stated her county has the same problems as Siskiyou in California and Josephine Co. in Oregon. Below is the link to Pearl’s webpage connecting the dots. Also, a BIG thank you to our local KARE Assoc. for putting these facts together. They have followed and documented the destruction to the environment by the Greenies and government for more than 25 years! — Editor Liz Bowen

    http://www.behindmyback.org/2016/06/10/the-human-toll-of-wa-dc-edicts-2012-2016/

From KARE, Klamath Alliance for Resources and Environment in Siskiyou County, CA.

The Human Toll in Siskiyou County

Siskiyou County has been hard hit by the environmental movement during the past twenty years. Time and again, we are promised that tourism will rise and offset any damage to our resource driven economy, and yet those dollars refuse to materialize. For 20 years, timber has been excluded from our national forests (see this shocking graph) which consume nearly two thirds of our entire county. Mining has been all but eliminated, agriculture (the largest remaining industry in this county) and now KS Wild has the temerity to claim that our county will be better off with another 200,000 acres (of 600,000 total) of timberland locked up in some “climate refuge?” Next time somebody trots out that line, give them some of these demographic statistics:

    Unemployment, July 2011

(State wide data by county: PDF file)

    California: 12.4%

    Siskiyou Co: 16.6%

    Shasta Co: 15.0%

    Modoc Co: 13.9%

    Humboldt Co: 11.9%

    LA Co: 13.3%

    Sacramento Co: 12.9%

    San Franscsco Co: 9.0%

    Siskiyou County 2010 Snapshot

    (PDF file)

    Population: around 48,000

The median age of the population is 43

36% of the population is employed

    Unemployment is 18.5%

Median Household Income $35,692 ($59,928 for CA)

28% of households have children under 18 (46% USA)

18% of the population lives below the poverty line (13% CA)

27% of children live below the poverty line (18.5% CA)

18% of the population is eligible for food stamps

22% are eligible for Medi-Cal programs (18% CA)

Substantiation of Child Abuse and Neglect 31.7 per 1,000 ( 9/1,000 for CA)

Siskiyou Co. has higher rates of all violent crime (aggravated assaults, forcible rape and robbery) except homicide than Los Angeles Co. 11% of Seniors aged 60 and above have been abused.

Methamphetamine accounts for 44% of substance abuse treatment admissions. Roughly 11.9 percent of adolescents under 18 reported binge drinking over the past month (CA 6.6 percent.)

Of youth between age 10-17 admitted for treatment, 72% were for marijuana, 17% methamphetamine, and 11% alcohol. 83% were male. This age group also accounts for 13% of drug-related arrests.

Individuals between 25 and 34 years account for 25 percent of admissions to alcohol and drug treatment. This age group also accounts for 22 percent of drug related arrests

Individuals between 35 and 44 years accounts for 27 percent of alcohol-related arrests

    Twenty Year Trends

    (PDF file)

Demographic Trends — Age distribution: The census indicates that between 1990 and 2008, Siskiyou County experienced a 25% loss in the population of children under the age of 18. The County saw a 45% increase in the population age 45-64 and an 18% increase of those age 65 and older. This shows that our population is aging dramatically, and younger family wage earners are migrating elsewhere.

Income Trends; The BEA (Bureau of Economic Analysis) indicates that in 1987, the average wage for jobs in Siskiyou County were 73% of the California average. There was a steady decline down to as low as 57% in the year 2000, then the percentage stabilized at 61 % with an increase to 63% in 2008. This shows that our wages are depressed, not keeping pace with inflation and the rest of the state.

Unemployment — The EDD statistics indicate that from 1990-2009, the highest rates of unemployment occurred in individual months in 1991-1993 (19.3-21.1%.) The average rate of unemployment for 1991 was 13.2, for 1992 — 15.8 and for 1993 -15.6. This high rate likely reflects the closure of the four timber mills in Siskiyou County between 1989-1999. The rate of unemployment then very gradually decreased each year until it plateaued around 2001 -2007 at 8-9.5% It climbed to an average of 10.2% in 2008 and was at 15.8% average in 2009.

Median Household Income The census (SAIPE) reports that in 1989, the median household income of Siskiyou County residents was $22,077. This was 66% of the California median, (down $11,000 from the CA median.) In 2008, the Siskiyou County median was $36,823. It had decreased to 60% of the California median, (down $24,000 from the CA median household income.) Siskiyou County ranks 51 out of 58 California Counties in median income.

Poverty Rates — The census (SAIPE) reports that in 1989, 14.4% of Siskiyou County residents lived below the poverty line. This was 1.7% higher than the poverty rate for California in general. In 1989, 23.5% of children under 18 in Siskiyou County lived in poverty. This was 2.2% higher than the California rate. In 2008, 16.4% of all residents in Siskiyou County lived in poverty. This is a 2 percent increase in the rate over that of 1989 and is 3.1% higher than the California rate. In 2008, 25.4% of children under the age of 18 in Siskiyou County lived in poverty. That is a 2 percent increase in the rate over that of 1989 and is 6.9% greater than the California rate.

Summary Comment: Siskiyou County is an aging county. A large percentage of children in the county live in poverty and this is getting worse. Average wages are poor compared to the rest of California and getting worse. The household median income in the County has historically lagged far behind that of California and is getting worse. Unemployment has always been substantially higher than California in general. After stabilizing from high employment in the aftermath of mill closures and Forest Service layoffs, unemployment has substantially increased in the past two years and is climbing. It is currently 15.6% (May 2010.) The well-being of a substantial number of Siskiyou County residents is depressed and trending downward.

Ties That Bind Farmers and Ranchers

Quite regularly, someone seems to say to me “Oh but doesn’t that farm and all those animals really tie you down?”

    Why yes, yes they do.

They tie me to starting my day when the sun rises and ending it well after the sun sets…but it means I always get to see them both.

They tie me to the rhythm of the seasons…the might of the winter blizzard, the first spring breeze carrying the scent of rain, the towering glory of a summer thunderhead and the fall of leaves from the poplar trees.

They tie me to concentrating on the chores that need to be done right now…not the regrets of yesterday nor the worries for tomorrow.

THIS FARM AND ALL THESE ANIMALS KEEP ME TIED DOWN TO EARTH WHEN THE REST OF THE UNIVERSE TRIES TO FLIP ME UPSIDE DOWN.

And so I would much rather be tied down here than set adrift in the tumultuous sea I see so many others in. I find this mooring rather to my liking.

To my fellow Americans, it is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I pick up my pen once more, not because I want too, but because it is needful.  A great man and redound patriot once rode through the night, at great personal peril, to warn others of the approaching  British forces, his name was PAUL REVERE, I find it necessary to do in my small way, the same now, and warn my fellows of the coming storm.

Over the last few weeks, men who I consider true patriots, took control of a wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon, THIS WAS TO PROTEST THE ILLEGAL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAND GRABS BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THROUGH THE BLM (BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT), they did so in a peaceful manner, without threats or violence, an unmanned facility with doors left unlocked, vehicles with key’s in the ignitions.

THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT has announced the formation of new division of Security, Protection and Intelligence.  The new division is being created months after Ammon Bundy led dozens of armed anti-federal-lands activists in seizing the unoccupied Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. It’s unclear to what extent the new BLM law enforcement post is connected to the Malheur incident or to the general rise in anti-federal-lands activity in the rural West.

This new department will operate independently of the already existing BLM Department of Law Enforcement and Protection under Director Salvatore Lauro,

IT WILL ALSO OPERATE INDEPENDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIORS (BLM’S MOTHER AGENCY)

according to James Gallagher Director of Intelligence for the Department of Interior. In fact it is quite unclear as to who will have oversight over this new department or who authorized it’s creation. In calls to BLM public affairs officers they were unaware of the creation of the new division.

JEANETTE FINICUM RESPONDS TO OREGON STATE AND FBI INVESTIGATIVE REPORT

According to the news story from Portland Oregon: “Officials investigating the death of Robert [LaVoy] Finicum are ready to release results” of the fatal shooting “during a Jan. 26 traffic stop while trying to arrest the rancher and others involved in the takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge.”

March 8, 2016, St. George, UT.
    — LaVoy Finicum’s wife Jeanette Finicum released this statement at a news conference in St. George, Utah:
The news conference held earlier today in Bend, Oregon to release the report of the investigation regarding my husband’s death was to be expected. No surprises. The purpose of that announcement was for state and federal agencies to continue to lay the foundation of their legal case.
However, they also continue to bring forward selective evidence. As in all such situations there is another side to this story. We will provide a more thorough analysis at a follow up news conference tomorrow and will be taking questions at that time. Meanwhile, we continue to maintain my husband’s innocence.
As a family, along with our lawyers, we deny this statement. This was not a traffic stop. It was an ambush with a roadblock placed on a blind curve along a lonely stretch of highway. I am told that in law enforcement and prosecuting circles this is called a “Deadman’s blockade,” and is designed to allow a “kill stop” which is illegal.
The news story continues: “The FBI said Finicum was shot after reaching for a gun…”. We reject that statement. The FBI’s aerial video was of poor quality, edited and provided no audio. Our family asserts that he was shot with both hands up, he was not reaching for anything at the time of the first shot. He was walking with his hands in the air, a symbol of surrender. When he reached down to his left hip he was reacting to the pain of having been shot.
I can hardly believe that a team of qualified law officers could look at the facts in this case and say that no criminal laws were violated.
How could they have reached this decision in the face of evidence that clearly shows intent to kill my husband?
We have talked with an independent investigator who has stated that the “video proves a set up assassination.”
Many people, including my lawyers, have tried to prepare me for this—-“be strong”, “accept this with peace” —–but I don’t think anything could prepare me to accept what is so clearly a finding that challenges the Constitution that my husband died defending.
I know that under the Constitution the men who shot my husband to death, while he was surrendering, are entitled to due process of law—-but they are not entitled to walk free and not have to face the same legal process that is a barrier to you or to me.
They shot my husband, they left him lying in the snowbank—no medical assistance, no charges, no arraignment, no preliminary hearing, no indictment, and no trial by a jury, — and should they just walk free? It just is not right.
The consolation I have is that hundreds of thousands of Americans have seen and know the truth and believe as I do that my husband was murdered “intentionally, deliberately and with malice.”
My lawyer has assured me that we will seek justice in a different court, under different circumstances—and I look forward to the day when these men do face a jury that is unbiased enough to return a fair verdict.
After the Finicum funeral, rallies spontaneously began to organize in many states. The organizers counted, possibly as many as 300 rallies took place throughout the country, in every state but Rhode Island.
It has been asked how this movement got such momentum so quickly. When Americans heard the details of this story and how these American patriots who have no criminal record and who have stood on the same interpretation of the US Constitution as Justice Scalia have been treated, the actions of law enforcement and the FBI have “shock [ed] the conscience.” Our Supreme Court has set as the standard guideline for practices of law enforcement that are unacceptable to our society, as those that “shock the conscience”.
A Deadman’s blockade with the intent to kill “shocks the conscience.” Shooting to kill with both hand up “shocks the conscience.”
Violating the 8th Amendment – cruel and unusual punishment – by placing Americans with no criminal records, who are apparently guilty of defending the US Constitution and the overreach of federal authorities, into solitary confinement and then removing their constitutional right to bear arms are two examples of how elected and appointed officials in the court system, legislative bodies and in law enforcement are violating the Constitution they swear to uphold.
The Supreme Court has referred to solitary confinement as being “violently insane.” The court has recognized that solitary confinement tortures our human brain and diminishes our God given strength to overcome obstacles.
Solitary confinement is a form of torture that often drives prisoners mad.
Last year a Supreme Court Justice wrote a concurring opinion that described the history of solitary confinement and said the practice bears a “peculiar mark of infamy” in its ability to shatter the minds and spirits of prisoners.
Who are we? We are outraged that men and women who have no criminal records and who posed no threat during the protest in Oregon are being treated as mere animals.
The American people are outraged at this inhumanity, this brutality and barbarism by the courts and law enforcement. It has created a new American awakening from both the Left and the Right. It “shocks our conscience.” And that is why around 300 rallies spontaneously organized in support of my husband’s assassination and these patriots who are being held as political prisoners.
Again, my lawyer has assured me that we will seek justice in a different court, under different circumstances—
We will be commenting on the FBI’s and Deschutes County press release tomorrow after we review their findings fully.
    Thank you.

    Bottom line

ARE YOU ANGRY NOW? ARE YOU VOTING FOR DONALD TRUMP?

    Jefferson went on to explain:

“When they (the Indians) withdraw themselves to the culture of a small piece of land,
they will perceive how useless to them are their extensive forests,
and will be willing to pare them off from time to time in exchange for necessaries for their farms and families.

First State of the Union Address
    December 12, 1817
“The earth was given to mankind to support the greatest number of which it is capable, and no tribe or people have a right to withhold from the wants of others more than is necessary for their own support and comfort.”
“In terminating Indian hostilities, as must soon be done…the emigration, which has heretofore been great, will probably increase, and the demand for land and the augmentation in its value be in like proportion.”

Sixth State of the Union Address
    Dec. 3, 1822

Fourth State of the Union Address
    Dec. 5, 1848
“The title to all the Indian lands within the several States of our Union, with the exception of a few small reservations, is now extinguished, and a vast region opened for settlement and cultivation.”
“Within the last four years eight important treaties have been negotiated with different Indian tribes, and at a cost of $1,842,000; Indian lands to the amount of more than 18,500,000 acres have been ceded to the United States, and provision has been made for settling in the country west of the Mississippi the tribes which occupied this large extent of the public domain.”

THIS IS HER STORY… Oregon candidate exposes social, economic catastrophe caused by federal control in Josephine County

    February 26, 2016
An Open Letter to Presidential Candidates from Josephine County, Oregon
By Toni Webb, candidate for Commissioner of Josephine County
TO: Candidates running for President of the United States

This letter is to inform you of the struggles faced by the people of Josephine County, Oregon, due to ongoing problems with the federal government’s control of our public land, including our once-productive forests. Bad policies and misguided management by federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, have left our rural county economically and socially devastated.

I hope that you, as candidates for President of the United States, will seriously consider why the effort to transfer the ownership and control of public lands back to western states, like Oregon, is so critical to our survival.
I am from Josephine County, Oregon.
Earlier this month—the last remaining sawmill in our county closed indefinitely because they could not get enough logs to fill orders. We’ve gone from 19 sheriff’s patrols to a budget for only three patrols by this summer. Our County government laid off 127 people in 2012; 90 of those people were in the Sheriff’s Department.

All promises from the Federal government to Josephine County have been broken. The government has not honored its commitment in the 1937 O&C Act, and the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service have incrementally reduced the timber harvests for two decades.

With this loss of use of our land to generate revenue and provide jobs, come many of the predictable social problems, as indicated below: drug abuse, health problems, rise in student dropout rates, children living in poverty, increased homelessness, and reliance on welfare subsidies.

This is the result of not having control and benefit of our county land.
Poverty in Josephine County has reached the point that we cannot pass a property tax levy to fund public safety. Having barebones public safety negatively impacts our ability to retain and attract businesses and qualified workers.

We would appreciate having the support of our presidential candidates for the transfer of our lands from federal mismanagement.

We need your help to prevent further loss and to reverse the losses that have plunged our county into poverty.

No matter which candidate emerges from the Presidential race, we will be looking to support the candidate who will be in favor of transferring the control of public lands to the states. If you want to restore the promise of America, start with Josephine County and help us help ourselves.
    Thank you and Best Wishes,
    Toni Webb

Group: Fix the national parks we have, don’t create new ones
    by Liz Bowen
PNP comment: I don’t know who is behind this group, but this certainly sounds like a good idea. — Editor Liz Bowen
    Summary
A group behind “free market environmentalism” said the nation’s nearly $12 billion backlog of deferred maintenance at national parks could be in part solved by taking care of the ones that already exist, instead of spending money on new ones.

    By Amy Joi O’Donoghue,
    Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — A new report issued by a group promoting “free market environmentalism” said the national park system will observe its 100th anniversary this year with a nearly $12 billion backlog of needed maintenance — something it says seven key strategies would help reduce.
    Consider:
    • A leaky wastewater system dumped raw sewage into the streams in Yosemite.
    • Frequent ruptures in an 83-year-old pipeline system at the Grand Canyon causes water shortages and facility closures.
    • And nearly half the roads in national parks are in fair or poor condition.
The Property and Environmental Research Center founded 35 years ago in Bozeman, Montana, issued “Breaking the Backlog,” detailing deferred maintenance projects that are five times higher than the National Park Service’s budget.
Over the past 10 years, Congress has funded 4 percent of the agency’s total backlog, while discretionary spending to address the problem has decreased 40 percent.
The group founded on property rights principles and markets said it is unrealistic to expect Congress to fix existing problems at national parks like roads, campgrounds, wastewater treatment systems or failing bridges because conserving new land has broader appeal and more political punch.
The federal government, however, should stop acquiring land for national parks and instead prioritize taking care of the land it already has, the group says.
“By focusing on land acquisition, limited conservation dollars are spent at the expense of properly maintaining existing lands,” the report notes. “Moreover, adding more public lands can exacerbate the problem because the federal government incurs even more liabilities, often with little or no means of maintaining the additional lands.”
The group recommends reforming the (LWCF) Land and Water Conservation Fund

    —  which it said has allocated $100 million to acquire 100,000 acres from 2011-2014 — and instead dedicate the federal dollars to maintenance at existing parks.
That idea is likely to draw cries of protest.
Multiple key environmental organizations across the country consider the fund’s ability to facilitate the federal government’s acquisition of more public lands sacrosanct, skewering Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, when he proposed reforms last year.
Paul Wilkins, chief conservation officer for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, a coalition of sportsmen’s organizations, said there is no need to come up with new strategies to address the maintenance backlog at national parks.

Grazing Service + General Land Office = Bureau of Land Management

General Land Office-To handle the rapidly growing public land business,
Congress created the GLO in 1812. The GLO handled all public land issues, including sales, patents and land entries. Surveyors were sent out with tools of the trade to record in their notebooks all mines, salt licks, salt springs, mill sites, water courses and the quality of the lands. This information helped purchasers and homesteaders make informed decisions about the lands offered.

Grazing Service- With westward expansion came increases in livestock
grazing and deteriorating rangelands. Between 1870 and 1900, the number
of beef cows tripled, and the number of sheep quadrupled. The sheer
numbers of livestock, combined with drought in the early 1930s, set the
stage for the development of a new government agency. With the passage of the Taylor Grazing Act in 1934, Congress established the Grazing Service to manage public land grazing

Bureau of Land Management-On July 16, 1946, the GLO and the Grazing Service merged and became the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) within the Department of Interior. Eventually, the era of homesteaders and land sales passed.

Today, the BLM manages land under the principle of “multiple use” to allow all citizens the opportunity to use and enjoy public lands.

In addition, the BLM now has the National Landscape Conservation System-whose mission is to conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes, which include many of the great American western landscapes.

Original land surveys and settlement records, still managed by the BLM, help tell the rich history of the American West.
