December 18, 2015 Opioid crisis drives record number of US overdose deaths

Prescription painkillers, heroin, and other opioids killed more than 28,000 people in the United States last year, driving the highest number of drug overdose deaths on record.

The new data, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, underscores the devastating effects of a opioid crisis that is ravaging communities both rich and poor.

Three-fifths of the country’s total drug overdose deaths came from illegal heroin use and opioids prescribed by medical professionals or obtained from other places, up 14 percent over 2013 and triple the rate in 2000.

DECEMBER 18, 2015 Deaths were highest in West Virginia, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Kentucky, and OHIO. Massachusetts — which is trying to take the issue head-on — also saw deaths rise significantly.

AUGUST 1, 2016 At a town hall meeting Monday in Columbus, OHIO, the Republican presidential nominee Trump, stressed the need to stop the flow of drugs into the United States, saying he would “cut off the source, build a wall.”

“If I win, I’m going to stop it,” he said, after being asked what he would do to address the opioid epidemic.

According to Trump, the people in New Hampshire would tell him: “It comes from the southern border.”

HE DID SPEAK TO THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM. NEARLY 30,000 AMERICANS ARE NOW DYING ANNUALLY FROM OPIOID OVERDOSES.

“IT’S NOT JUST IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, IT’S ALL OVER THE PLACE,” TRUMP SAID. “MOTHERS AND FATHERS ARE LOSING THEIR CHILDREN.”

He then turned to treatment as another avenue for addressing the crisis, though he offered few specifics beyond a pledge to spend money on recovery.

“It’s very hard to get out of that addiction of heroin,” he said. “That’s the other thing we’re going to do: WE’RE GOING TO TAKE ALL OF THESE KIDS — AND PEOPLE, NOT JUST KIDS — THAT ARE TOTALLY ADDICTED AND THEY CAN’T BREAK IT. We’re going to work with them, we’re going to spend the money, we’re gonna get that habit broken.”

Donald Trump’s plan for heroin addiction: Build a wall — and offer some treatment

The number of US overdose deaths involving opioids, including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin, has nearly quadrupled since 1999. But many of those deaths have been linked to prescription painkillers, which have been prescribed by American doctors and which are a gateway to HEROIN addiction.

INCREASINGLY, US EXPERTS SAY AMERICANS ARE USING FENTANYL, A SYNTHETIC OPIOID THAT IS BEING SHIPPED INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM MEXICO AND BY CHINESE SUPPLIERS.

TRUMP: MEXICAN DRUGS ‘POISONING OUR YOUTH’

DONALD TRUMP ON MONDAY LASHED OUT AT CRITICS OF HIS PLAN TO BUILD A WALL ALONG THE SOUTHERN BORDER AND WARNED THAT DRUGS FROM MEXICO ARE “POURING INTO THE COUNTRY” AND “POISONING OUR YOUTH.”

Speaking at a campaign rally in Albany, N.Y., Trump defended his idea to force Mexico to pay for the wall, saying it would require a one-time cost of $10 billion, while the U.S. runs a trade deficit with Mexico every year that tops $58 billion.

“And that doesn’t include the drugs that are pouring into the country poisoning our youth,” Trump added. “They’re poisoned with this crap.”

“People won’t be driving their pick-up trucks through the wall or over the wall,” he added. “Did you ever see that? The trucks go over, they unload the drugs and then they go back. So we get the drugs and they get the money. Not very good folks. That’s going to all change.”

The remarks recalled Trump’s campaign launch speech from June that sparked a firestorm of controversy and provoked several companies to cut ties with his business. At the time, Trump said illegal immigrants are bringing drugs and crime into the country and warned that some of are “rapists” and other criminals.

    2016 Facts & Figures

    Opioid Addiction

    • Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illicit drug HEROIN as well as the ilicit prescription pain relievers oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, fentanyl and others.
    • Opioidsare chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain and nervous system to produce pleasurable effects and relieve pain
    • Addiction is a primary, chronic and relapsing brain disease characterized by an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors.
    • OF THE 21.5MILLION AMERICANS12 OR OLDER THAT HAD A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER IN 2014, 1.9 MILLION HAD A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER INVOLVING PRESCRIPTION PAIN RELIEVERS AND 586,000 HAD A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER INVOLVING HEROIN.It is estimated that 23% of individuals who use heroin develop opioid addiction.

    National Opioid Overdose Epidemic

    • Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 47,055 lethal drug overdoses in 2014. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic, with 18,893 overdose deaths related to prescription pain relievers, and 10,574 overdose deaths related to heroin in 2014.
    • From 1999 to 2008, overdose death rates, salesand substance use disorder treatment admissions related to prescription pain relievers increased in parallel. The overdose death rate in 2008 was nearly four times the 1999 rate; sales of prescription pain relievers in 2010 were
    • In 2012, 259 million prescriptions were written for opioids, which is more than enough to give every American adult their own bottle of pills.
    • Four in five new heroin users started out misusing prescription painkillers
    • 94% of respondents in a 2014 survey of people in treatment for opioid addiction said they chose to use heroin because prescription opioids were “far more expensive and harder to obtain

    Impact on Special Populations

ADOLESCENTS (12 TO 17 YEARS OLD) In 2014…..467,000 adolescents were current “NONMEDICAL’ users of pain reliever, with 168,000 having an addiction to prescription pain relievers

In 2014, an estimated 28,000 adolescents had used heroin in the past year and an estimated16,000 were current heroin users.

Additionally, an estimated 18,000 adolescents had heroin a heroin use disorder in 2014.

People often share their unused pain relievers, unaware of the dangers of nonmedical opioid use. Most adolescents who misuse prescription pain relievers are given them for free by a friend or relative.

The prescribing rates for prescription opioids among adolescents and young adults nearly doubled from1994 to 2007Women

    • Women are more likely to have chronic pain, be prescribed prescription

pain relievers, be given higher doses, and use them for longer time periods than men. Women may become dependent on prescription pain relievers

    more quickly than men.

    • 48,000 women died of prescription pain reliever overdoses between 1999 and 2010

    • Prescription pain reliever overdose deaths among women

increased more than 400% from 1999 to 2010, compared to 237% among men

    • Heroin overdose deaths among women have tripled in the last few years. From 2010 through 2013, female heroin overdoses increased from

    0.4 to 1.2 per 100,000

    As a concerned American Grandmother,

Let me as America a Question

DO YOU KNOW AN AMERICAN FAMILY THAT HAS “NOT”  BEEN AFFECTED BY THE  ILLICIT HEROIN DRUG ADDICTION  EPIDEMIC IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

And, As president, OPEN BORDER NO ACTION  Hillary will focus on:  Teaching adolescents? Don’t use Drugs? Drugs are bad? Just say no?

Prevention: Let’s empower communities to implement programs to teach adolescents about drug use and addiction.
